Significant Points of Psychologists Career
  • About 34 percent of psychologists are self-employed, compared with only 8 percent of all workers. Competition for admission to graduate psychology programs is keen. Overall employment of psychologists is expected to grow faster than average. Job prospects should be the best for people who have a doctoral degree in an applied specialty, such as counseling or health, and those with a specialist or doctoral degree in school psychology.
Nature of Psychologists Work
Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Research psychologists investigate the physical, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of human behavior. Psychologists in health service fields provide mental health care in hospitals, clinics, schools, or private settings. Psychologists employed in applied settings, such as business, industry, government, or nonprofit organizations, provide training, conduct research, design organizational systems, and act as advocates for psychology. Like other social scientists, psychologists formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. Research methods vary with the topic under study. Psychologists sometimes gather information through controlled laboratory experiments or by administering personality, performance, aptitude, or intelligence tests. Other methods include observation, interviews, questionnaires, clinical studies, and surveys.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the need for clinical social workers is expected to increase 16 percent, and 12 percent for psychologists, from 2008-2018. There are many similarities between psychologists and clinical social workers. Clinical social workers and psychologists must have a desire to help clients, great communication skills, and a license to practice. There are many differencea, too.

  • Psychologists are concerned with human behavior patterns and understanding how to predict that behavior. They study humans and their mental processes by interpreting, observing and recording. Psychologists try to understand people's behavior, emotions, thoughts and feelings. Since psychology is a diverse field, psychologists can specialize in different areas such as clinical psychologists, counseling and social psychology. Clinical social workers, simply known as social workers, help people to deal with or solve their problems, such as mental illness, relationships , abuse or unemployment. Like psychologists, social workers have sub-specialties. Unlike psychologists, social workers can specialize in policymaking, mental

Clinical psychology is the most common subspecialty. Clinical psychologists work in hospitals, private practices, and clinics. They help patients deal with illnesses (e.g., stroke, chronic pain), injuries (e.g., spinal cord injury), and personal crises (e.g., divorce, death of a loved one). Counseling psychologists assist patients in coping with every day living. They advise patients based on various test results and interviews, and often work in university counseling centers, hospitals, and in private practice.
