Is the Program for Psychology and Religion strictly for clients in the intensive program? Do you see just men? No. We work with women in all divisions of the Program. We strive to keep our intensive program in balance, which benefits both genders. Where do clients who come from outside the St. Louis area stay when they enter the intensive program, a special program, or an aftercare program? Clients who come from other cities, states or countries stay in local parishes, convents, or monasteries, often continuing to practice a sacramental ministry. How long do clients typically remain in treatment? The length of treatment varies entirely upon the particular need of the individual. The length of care ranges from one-week for those who come only for evaluation and recommendations, three to four months for those who enter a special, focused program, to four to eight months for those who enter the intensive program. Is the program only for Catholic priests and religious?

The Shadow
Unfortunately there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines himself or wants to be. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. Furthermore, it is constantly in contact with other interests, so that it is continually subjected to modifications. But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected. "Psychology and Religion" (1938). In CW 11: Psychology and Religion: West and East. P.131 It is a frightening thought that man also has a shadow side to him, consisting not just of little weaknesses- and foibles, but of a positively demonic dynamism. The individual seldom knows anything of this; to him, as an individual, it is incredible that he should ever in any circumstances go beyond himself. But let these harmless creatures form a mass, and there emerges a raging monster; and each individual is only one tiny cell in the monster's body, so that for better or worse he must accompany it on its bloody rampages and even assist it to the utmost. Having a dark suspicion of these grim possibilities, man turns a blind eye to the shadow-side of human nature. Blindly he strives against the salutary dogma of original sin, which is yet so prodigiously true. Yes, he even hesitates to admit the conflict of which he is so painfully aware.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Steiner, Rudolf S teiner is the founder of Anthroposophy . Consider a philosopher and educator in his own right; his teachings embody philosophy, the social sciences, the natural sciences, agricultural, the arts, education, psychology, and religion. Commonly Anthroposophy is said to be based on what Steiner called Spiritual Science; however, in An Outline of Occult Science (1972) in a footnote Steiner writes: "The term 'spiritual science' as is apparent from the context, is here synonymous with the terms 'occult science' and supersensible knowledge.'" ( ) Anthroposophy is a unique combination of Rosicrucian, Theosophy, and Christianity. On February 27, 1861, Steiner was born in Kraljevic, then a part of Hungary and now in Yugoslavia. His parents were Austrian. His father was a railway clerk and intended his son to become a civil engineer. By the age of eight, Steiner possessed clairvoyance awareness of the unseen. The apparition of a dead relative and the visualization of energies produced by the plant kingdom were among his experiences. When discovering geometry in school, he perceived the geometric forms as living realities. Steiner, when fifteen, began learning the secret occult lore of plants from Felix Korgutski who eventually introduced him to an adept that was referred to as "the Master," who spiritually initiated him. Steiner never revealed the identity of this latter individual, according to occult tradition.

The division is nonsectarian. Membership and division activities are open to members of all faiths as well as to those who are not religiously affiliated or do not profess a particular personal faith commitment. Division 36 seeks a broad dialogue on religion with all the areas of the social sciences. This area is one of the oldest in psychology; research on religious development and experience was conducted over a century ago, and both William James and G. Stanley Hall were leading psychologists of religion. Division 36 is working to re-establish the scientific psychology of religion to the respected status it once held so firmly in our discipline.

Treating Depression From Two Perspectives: Psychology And Religion
"You largely constructed your depression. It wasn't given to you. Therefore, you can deconstruct it." Albert Ellis Find out more!
So, depression is a fact, a reality which is not only "the disease of the century" but it can be said it appeared when irrational beliefs appeared, and this probably happened when humanity came into being. From this point of view, it is perfectly normal that the concerning for depression was manifested long before the psychological theories developed. One of the domains which deal with depression is the spiritual or the religious domain. From this perspective, depression is seen in various ways. Some tend to consider it a sin, others a means of punishment and others just a simple consequence of one’s actions and thoughts. This largely depends on they way God is perceived.
One of the psychological models which combine psychology and spirituality and which tries to answer to questions like what is the role of depression and why did God allow depression among humanity, is "The Heart Cry Model" (HCM), elaborated by Armentrout (1995, 2000). The essence of this model states the idea that depression, especially in its initial forms, represents a motivational state, allowed by God in order to make people adopt corrective measures. Because God’s intention is to make humanity resemble to Him and to actualize His image in His creation, God intervenes into the human existence through diverse methods which offer opportunities of changing and renewal.
