Imagine you are hiking into a valley on the tops of various mountains. You strenuously reach the top of a particular peak. Breathing heavily, you let out a sigh in triumph as you reach the top. Around yourself, you see a lake surrounded by the valley on three sides. Feeling the wind rush against your face, you yell a loud, "hello" and listen for an echo. This nature scene just brought the lesson at hand to focus: sensation and perception . Sensation is when a stimulus, something that causes a physical or mental response, is received by one of the various sense organs of the body (eg. the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and skin/touch) and are fed into the brain. Each of the structures and systems that make up our senses have specialized structures called sensory receptors. These receptors are specialized cells that receive an incoming stimulus through a sense system and are able to translate this stimulus into an electrical impulse the brain can use. Special sensory neurons are located at these receptors, capable of translating the stimulus into an electrical impulse the brain can interpret. Perception refers to how we take sensory input and translate it into something that can be interpreted and organized by our brain. The way you are perceiving the environment around you involves your brain communicating with all your senses. The echo you hear, the way you're able to tell the lake is surrounded by mountains, are all examples of the way we use perception.

Sensation and Perception: What is
the Difference?
We make contact with the world around us through our five primary senses — sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Psychologists distinguish between sensation and perception Sensation is the pickup of information by our sensory receptors, for example the eyes, ears, skin, nostrils, and tongue. In vision, sensation occurs as rays of light are collected by the two eyes and focused on the retina. In hearing, sensation occurs as waves of pulsating air are collected by the outer ear and transmitted through the bones of the middle ear to the cochlear nerve. Perception is the interpretation of what is sensed. The physical events transmitted to the retina may be interpreted as a particular color, pattern, or shape. The physical events picked up by the ear may be interpreted as musical sounds, a human voice, noise, and so forth. Lack of experience may cause a person to misinterpret what he has sensed. In other words, perception represents our apprehension of a present situation in terms of our past experiences , or, as stated by the philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804): "We see things not as they are but as we are."

Organization as a Primary Characteristic of Perception
Light describes energy variations over time and space. These variations can be characterized by "intensity" and "wavelength". Only "electromagnetic energy" in the range of approximately "400 to 700 nM", which the human eye can transduce, is called "light". Variations in the intensities and wavelengths of light that strike molecules on the "rod" and "cone" receptors of our retinas produce patterns of voltage variations in the process called "transduction". Following transduction, the voltage pattern variations are transformed through networks of "neurons" in our visual system. A first and seemingly immediate awareness, which more or less corresponds to the energy stimulation patterns, is referred to as "sensation". "Perception" can be distinguished from sensation in that it refers to a process which requires more organization than sensation, is more heavily dependent on learning than sensation, and requires more time for completion than sensation. Below are what might appear as blobs when you first look at them. Your immediate impression of the blobs provides an example of awareness at a sensory level. If you continue to look at the blobs, four stimuli will emerge. You needn't try to organize the blobs. The organization process will occur without any overt striving on your part. These blobs have been created to slow the perceptual process so that you can experience what typically occurs speedily in subjective time.

Sensation (psychology)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search In psychology sensation and perception are stages of processing of the senses in human and animal systems, such as vision auditory , vestibular, and pain senses. These topics are considered part of psychology, and not anatomy or physiology , because processes in the brain so greatly affect the perception of a stimulus. Included in this topic is the study of illusions such as motion aftereffect color constancy auditory illusions , and depth perception Sensation is the function of the low-level biochemical and neurological events that begin with the impinging of a stimulus upon the receptor cells of a sensory organ Perception is the mental process or state that is reflected in statements like "I see a uniformly blue wall", representing awareness or understanding of the real-world cause of the sensory input. In other words, sensations are the first stages in the functioning of senses to represent stimuli from the environment, and perception is a higher brain function about interpreting events and objects in the world. Gestalt theorists believe that with the two together a person experiences a personal reality that is greater than the parts.
