From the book's website: Abstract Algebra: Theory and Applications is an open-source textbook written by Tom Judson that is designed to teach the principles and theory of abstract algebra to college juniors and seniors in a rigorous manner. Its strengths include a wide range of exercises, both computational and theoretical, plus many nontrivial applications. The first half of the book presents group theory, through the Sylow theorems, with enough material for a semester-long course. The second-half is suitable for a second semester and presents rings, integral domains, Boolean algebras, vector spaces, and fields, concluding with Galois Theory.

This article is about the branch of mathematics. For other uses of the term "algebra" see algebra (disambiguation)
Abstract algebra is the field of mathematics that studies algebraic structure s, such as groups rings fields modules ... vector space s, and algebras . Most authors nowadays simply write algebra instead of abstract algebra The term abstract algebra now refers to the study of all algebraic structures, as distinct from the elementary algebra taught in schools, which teaches the correct rules for manipulating formulas and algebraic expressions involving real and complex number s, and unknowns. Elementary algebra can be taken to as an informal introduction to the structures known as the real field and commutative algebra Contemporary mathematics and mathematical physics make intensive use of abstract algebra; for example, theoretical physics draws on Lie algebra s. Fields such as algebraic number theory algebraic topology , and algebraic geometry apply algebraic methods to other areas of mathematics. Representation theory, roughly speaking, takes the 'abstract' out of 'abstract algebra', studying the concrete side of a given structure; see

Abstract algebra
Abstract algebra is the field of mathematics concerned with the study of algebraic structures such as groups rings and fields. The term "abstract algebra" is used to distinguish the field from " elementary algebra " or "high school algebra" which teaches the correct rules for manipulating formulas and algebraic expressions involving real and complex numbers Historically, algebraic structures usually arose first in some other field of mathematics, were specified axiomatically, and were then studied in their own right in abstract algebra. Because of this, abstract algebra has numerous fruitful connections to all other branches of mathematics. Examples of algebraic structures with a single binary operation are:
  • semigroups monoids groups quasigroups
More complicated examples include:
  • rings and fields modules and vector spaces associative algebras and Lie algebras lattices and Boolean algebras
In universal algebra , all those definitions and facts are collected that apply to all algebraic structures alike. All the above classes of objects, together with the proper notion of homomorphism , form categories , and category theory frequently provides the formalism for translating between and comparing different algebraic structures.

Abstract Algebra: The Basic Graduate Year
This is a student-oriented text covering the standard first year graduate course in algebra.
Solutions to all problems are included and some of the reasoning is informal.
A Course In Algebraic Number Theory
An introduction to the subject, covering both global and local fields. The prerequisite is a standard graduate course in algebra. A Course In Commutative Algebra Commutative algebra is the theoretical foundation of algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. Assuming as prerequisite a standard graduate algebra course, we attempt to reach an advanced level quickly and efficiently. Complex Variables Co-authored by W.P. Novinger (retired), Florida State University. This is a student-oriented text covering the standard first year graduate course in complex variables. Solutions to all problems are included.

It is intended for undergraduate students taking an abstract algebra class at the junior/senior level, as well as for students taking their first graduate algebra course. It is based on the books Abstract Algebra , by John A. Beachy and William D. Blair, and Abstract Algebra II , by John A. Beachy. The site is organized by chapter. The page containing the Table of Contents also contains an index of definitions and theorems, which can be searched for detailed references on subject area pages. Topics from the first volume are marked by the symbol and those from the second volume by the symbol . To make use of this site as a reference, please continue on to the Table of Contents.

The most important of these structures are groups rings , and fields . Important branches of abstract algebra are commutative algebra representation theory , and homological algebra Linear algebra , elementary number theory , and discrete mathematics are sometimes considered branches of abstract algebra.
