Overview
We present C++ software for a program which generates a primitive polynomial of degree n modulo p. You can also test a given polynomial for primitivity and find all primitive polynomials. A sample run from the command line: $ Primpoly 2 200 Primitive polynomial modulo 2 of degree 200 Self-check passes... x ^ 200 + x ^ 5 + x ^ 3 + x ^ 2 + 1, 2 Total time: 7 seconds on my MacBook Pro.

Introduction
Euclid's Elements form one of the most beautiful and influential works of science in the history of humankind. Its beauty lies in its logical development of geometry and other branches of mathematics. It has influenced all branches of science but none so much as mathematics and the exact sciences. The Elements have been studied 24 centuries in many languages starting, of course, in the original Greek, then in Arabic, Latin, and many modern languages. I'm creating this version of Euclid's Elements for a couple of reasons. The main one is to rekindle an interest in the Elements, and the web is a great way to do that. Another reason is to show how Java applets can be used to illustrate geometry. That also helps to bring the Elements alive. The text of all 13 Books is complete, and all of the figures are illustrated using the Geometry Applet, even those in the last three books on solid geometry that are three-dimensional. I still have a lot to write in the guide sections and that will keep me busy for quite a while. I worked my way partly through Abstract Algebra, 3 rd Edition You need only DandF7.m . The files below are included only because they may be needed for compatibility with the earlier notebooks. DandF7.m contains all the functions in them, however. These functions were developed under Mathematica 6. They may need a little work to run correctly under 7. While there is some optimization, these functions are not terribly efficient. On my computer, operations on groups up to order 16 are essentially immediate. You can do some operations on groups up to order 100 if you're willing to wait for the answer. (Drawing the lattice of subgroups is particularly slow.) If you're looking for serious, professional algebra software, I recommend GAP There is no documentation per se for these, but my notebooks include my workings of the problems and contain examples of use of all the defined functions. The notebooks are password-protected because I don't want to make them freely available on the web for cheating on algebra homework. E-mail me for a password. Use at your own risk!

The History of Algebra
Algebra may divided into "classical algebra" (equation solving or "find the unknown number" problems) and "abstract algebra", also called "modern algebra" (the study of groups, rings, and fields). Classical algebra has been developed over a period of 4000 years. Abstract algebra has only appeared in the last 200 years. The development of algebra is outlined in these notes under the following headings: Egyptian algebra, Babylonian algebra, Greek geometric algebra, Diophantine algebra, Hindu algebra, Arabic algebra, European algebra since 1500, and modern algebra. Since algebra grows out of arithmetic, recognition of new numbers - irrationals, zero, negative numbers, and complex numbers - is an important part of its history. The development of algebraic notation progressed through three stages: the rhetorical (or verbal) stage, the syncopated stage (in which abbreviated words were used), and the symbolic stage with which we are all familiar. The materials presented here are adapted from many sources including Burton, Kline's Mathematical Development From Ancient to Modern Times, Boyer's A History of Mathematics , and the essay on "The History of Algebra" by Baumgart in Historical Topics for the Mathematics Classroom - the 31st yearbook of the N.C.T.M.

This Mathematica -based book does not make any assumptions about the main text being used. It can readily be used by those who prefer a rings-first approach to algebra (eg., Hungerford users). Exploring Abstract Algebra with Mathematica includes 27 notebooks that are meant as labs for group and ring theory. In addition, it contains the documentation for the packages (AbstractAlgebra) upon which the labs are based. Description This two semester Abstract Algebra course is an introduction to abstract mathematical systems, including groups, rings, and fields (and morphisms between these). This is a junior/senior level course intended for majors. It is assumed that students have already been introduced to various methods of proof and they are expected to write many proofs in this course. Partially due to its abstractness and demand for providing proofs, this is typically one of the more difficult courses for our major. I am currently in the middle of the second time I have taught this year-long course with the Exploring Abstract Algebra with Mathematica notebooks. Based on anecdotal evidence, there are two main points noted by students. First, most students have appreciated the visualizations incorporated in the labs that help them to better understand the theoretic concepts. The graphics help not only those who are visual learners, but they also help encourage those who think symbolically to also learn visually. Second, after students have learned the computational basics, they have appreciated that the packages provide good computational tools for doing more complicated calculations.

I. Primarily for Undergraduates
First-Year Seminar For freshmen only What is Mathematics? A broad overview of the subject, intended primarily for liberal arts students. What do mathematicians do, and why do they do it? We will examine the art of proving theorems, from both the philosophical and aesthetic points of view, using examples such as non-Euclidean geometries, prime numbers, abstract groups, and uncountable sets. Emphasis will be placed on appreciating the beauty and variety of mathematical ideas. The course will include a survey of important results and unsolved problems that motivate mathematical research.
