    Abstract harmonic analysis - Definition
Harmonic analysis is the branch of mathematics which studies the representation of functions or signals as the superposition of basic waves. It investigates and generalizes the notions of Fourier series and Fourier transforms . The basic waves are called " harmonics ", hence the name "harmonic analysis." In the past two centuries, it has become a vast subject with applications in areas as diverse as signal processing, quantum mechanics, and neuroscience. The classical Fourier transform on R n is still an area of ongoing research, particularly concerning Fourier transformation on more general objects such as tempered distributions . For instance, if we impose some requirements on a distribution f, we can attempt to translate these requirements in terms of the Fourier transform of f. The Paley-Wiener theorem is an example of this. The Paley-Wiener theorem immediately implies that if f is a nonzero distribution of compact support (these include functions of compact support), then its Fourier transform is never compactly supported. This is a very elementary form of an uncertainty principle in a harmonic analysis setting. See also

Posted By : denisbul Date : Comments : Abstract Harmonic Analysis of Continuous Wavelet Transforms by Hartmut Fuhr This volume contains a systematic discussion of wavelet-type inversion formulae based on group representations, and their close connection to the Plancherel formula for locally compact groups. The connection is demonstrated by the discussion of a toy example, and then employed for two purposes: Mathematically, it serves as a powerful tool, yielding existence results and criteria for inversion formulae which generalize many of the known results. Moreover, the connection provides the starting point for a – reasonably self-contained – exposition of Plancherel theory. Therefore, the volume can also be read as a problem-driven introduction to the Plancherel formula. Download links: hotfile.com

    Introduction
Abstract harmonic analysis: if Fourier series is the study of periodic real functions, that is, real functions which are invariant under the group of integer translations, then abstract harmonic analysis is the study of functions on general topological groups which are invariant under a (closed) subgroup. This includes topics of varying level of specificity, including analysis on Lie groups or locally compact abelian groups. This area also overlaps with representation theory of topological groups.

May 7, 2010 - 12:48 — Anonymous Start: Jul 8 2010 - 00:00 End: Jul 8 2010 - 23:59 Venue: Institut Universitari de Matemàtiques i Aplicacions de Castelló (IMAC). Universidad Jaume I de Castellón, Spain. URL: http://www.ahaday-imac.uji.es Short description of the event: Abstract Harmonic Analysis, or Harmonic Analysis on Groups, is a discipline rooted in the classic theme of spectral analysis and synthesis of functions that identifies and exploits the relevance of the underlying group structure that pervades the whole theory through resentations and measures. Abstract Harmonic Analysis has grown a strong relationship with other neighboring disciplines such as Functional Analysis, Representation Theory or Group Theory. Due to this mixed character, experts in Abstract Harmonic Analysis can often be found scattered among Research Groups with different flavours. Our intention with the celebration of this Day at IMAC is to bring together a group of researchers with interest in Abstract Harmonic Analysis to discuss different views and problems. The Day will consist of three or four lectures and a problem discussion session.

    Description
Abstract theory remains an indispensable foundation for the study of concrete cases. It shows what the general picture should look like and provides results that are useful again and again. Despite this, however, there are few, if any introductory texts that present a unified picture of the general abstract theory. A Course in Abstract Harmonic Analysis offers a concise, readable introduction to Fourier analysis on groups and unitary representation theory. After a brief review of the relevant parts of Banach algebra theory and spectral theory, the book proceeds to the basic facts about locally compact groups, Haar measure, and unitary representations, including the Gelfand-Raikov existence theorem. The author devotes two chapters to analysis on Abelian groups and compact groups, then explores induced representations, featuring the imprimitivity theorem and its applications. The book concludes with an informal discussion of some further aspects of the representation theory of non-compact, non-Abelian groups.
