    Harmonic analysis of the stability of reverse routing in channels
    M. Bruen and J. C. I. Dooge
    Abstract. Normal downstream routing of a flood flow is a highly stable process for Froude numbers less than 1 and hence the results are reliable. In contrast, reverse routing in an upstream direction, which may be required for flow control, is potentially unstable. This paper reports the results of a study of the practical limits on channel lengths for reverse routing. Harmonic analysis is applied to the full non-linear solution of the St. Venant equations for three different wave patterns and two different wave periods, for a particular channel with a Froude number of 0.5. Reverse routing can be done for prismatic channels longer than 100 km. For long periods (>10 hours) the shape of the upstream hydrograph is recovered well. However, when the wave period is short ( <1 hour), the high frequency components of the upstream hydrograph and, thus, its shape, are not recovered. These limits are influenced by the channel morphology and shape of the wave. Further work is needed to determine how these factors interact.

Quantization in abstract harmonic analysis
by
Matthias Neufang
Carleton University, Ottawa Our aim is to give an overview of our recent contributions to various aspects of 'quantization' in abstract harmonic analysis - where this (very fashionable) word has two meanings for us:

    1. the use of operator space theory in the study of classical objects in harmonic analysis;
    2. the investigation of non-commutative counterparts of these objects arising through the replacement of functions by operators.
We shall illustrate this programme by discussing the following topics (throughout, G denotes a locally compact group).
    Amenability theory Z.-J. Ruan showed that the canonical operator space structure of the Fourier algebra A G ) is crucial for understanding its amenability properties - by proving that A G ) is operator amenable if and only if the group G p G ), for p

Title: Abstract harmonic analysis, homological algebra, and operator spaces
Authors: Volker Runde (Submitted on 5 Jun 2002 ( ), last revised 28 Dec 2002 (this version, v6)) Abstract: In 1972, B. E. Johnson proved that a locally compact group $G$ is amenable if and only if certain Hochschild cohomology groups of its convolution algebra $L^1(G)$ vanish. Similarly, $G$ is compact if and only if $L^1(G)$ is biprojective: In each case, a classical property of $G$ corresponds to a cohomological propety of $L^1(G)$. Starting with the work of Z.-J. Ruan in 1995, it has become apparent that in the non-commutative setting, i.e. when dealing with the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ or the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$, the canonical operator space structure of the algebras under consideration has to be taken into account: In analogy with Johnson's result, Ruan characterized the amenable locally compact groups $G$ through the vanishing of certain cohomology groups of $A(G)$. In this paper, we give a survey of historical developments, known results, and current open problems. Comments: 12 pages; a survey article; typos removed, references updated

Una Jornada alrededor del Análisis Armónico Abstracto.
JULY, 8th 2010 Instituto Universitario de Matemáticas y Aplicaciones de Castellón
IMAC

Universitat Jaume I. Castellón.
Spain Abstract Harmonic Analysis , or Harmonic Analysis on Groups, is a discipline rooted in the classic theme of spectral analysis and synthesis of functions that identifies and exploits the relevance of the underlying group structure that pervades the whole theory through representations and measures. Abstract Harmonic Analysis has grown a strong relationship with other neighboring disciplines such as Functional Analysis, Representation Theory or Group Theory. Due to this mixed character, experts in Abstract Harmonic Analysis can often be found scattered among Research Groups with different flavours. The purpose of this event is to gather a group of researchers with an interest in abstract Harmonic Analysis around three speakers with experience in this field.
The Day will consist of three lectures and an open session on problems and perspectives in Abstract Harmonic Analysis.
