Integration theory
KTH, SF 2709, Serguei Shimorin Course page (in Swedish) For all studies of analysis in higher mathematics it is fundamental to understand the concept of integration. Our intuitive idea of the integral of a function is as the area under its graph, and this can be turned into a formal definition through approximating Riemann sums. This leads to the Riemann integral which works fine in many circumstances, but has its limitations. One problem with the Riemann integral is that it does not manage functions with too many discontinuities, for example the function f(x) which is 1 if x is rational and if x is irrational cannot be integrated. Morally the integral should have the value zero since the rationals form a countable set which should not contribute to the integral. A more serious problem is that the Riemann integral does not behave nicely when one studies sequences of functions, such as the partial sums of a Fourier series approximating a periodic function. When can one move the limit inside the integral? In this course we will study the Lebesgue integral, and more general concepts of integrals and measure. Among other things we will see how the above problems are resolved and we will study the important L

In 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute published a list of seven one-million dollar Millennium Prize Problems. These problems, selected by a panel of leading mathematicians, are widely regarded as the most important open problems in mathematics. One problem on the list is the Riemann Hypothesis, which concerns the location of the zeroes of the so-called Riemann zeta function. A proof of the Riemann Hypothesis would have major implications for many questions in number theory, notably on the distribution of prime numbers. Another Clay problem is the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. It asserts that one can obtain very precise information about the arithmetic of an elliptic curve-or, in plain terms, about the rational solutions to cubic equations in two variables-by analytic means; namely, by examining a special value of the Hasse-Weil L-function associated to the curve. Both the Riemann zeta function and the Hasse-Weil L-functions are examples of L-functions, and their occurrence on the Clay list illustrates the central role that L-functions play in number theory in general and in arithmetic algebraic geometry in particular. `Arithmetic algebraic geometry' is the modern name for the age-old theory of diophantine equations, with an emphasis on the use of tools from algebraic geometry.

    Course description
Algebraic geometry occupies a central place in modern pure mathematics, with connections to number theory, theoretical physics and differential geometry in particular. For example, elliptic curves and modular curves play vital roles in arithmetic; startling advances in the theory of higher-dimensional varieties and moduli spaces have emerged from, and contributed to, physics; and the theory of real 4-manifolds has similarly interacted with complex algebraic surfaces. One of the most influential problems for computer algebra has been to carry out explicit calculations in algebraic geometry. Within algebraic geometry, there has been great progress over the last few years. The study of algebraic varieties of dimension three and more, initiated by Mori and others in the 1970s, has reached an advanced stage. Major results have been proved in enumerative geometry, especially on moduli spaces. The geometric meanings contained in resolutions of ideals (syzygies) have been much better explained and can be applied very directly, often with computer assistance.

    Computational Algebraic Geometry
    for Curves and Surfaces
Organized by (Florida State University) and Emil Volcheck (National Security Agency). This special session will be held Friday and Saturday, 12-13 January 2001, at the New Orleans Joint Mathematics Meetings . This is the second special session on this topic to be held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings. The first special session was held in 1999 at the San Antonio Joint Meetings.
    Scope
This session is devoted to algorithms and constructive techniques for algebraic curves, Riemann surfaces, and algebraic surfaces. We are interested in reports on algorithms to solve problems or on a significant use of computational algebra techniques to obtain results. Algorithmic, algebraic, arithmetic, and analytic aspects of curves and surfaces are appropriate topics. Read about the 1999 special session on computational algebraic geometry for curves and surfaces to see what previous speakers in this series have presented.
    Deadlines
The deadline to guarantee consideration of an abstract was 8 August 2000 The final deadline for abstract submission is 3 October 2000 . We are accepting new proposals on a rolling basis up to the final deadline, as space permits.

    Equivariant intersection theory
    Lukecin, Poland, September 11th - September 17th, 2005
Teachers: Andrew Kresch (Warwick, UK) and Angelo Vistoli (Bologna, Italy) Program: The subject of our lectures will be equivariant intersection theory. To any smooth complex algebraic variety X one associates two important rings, the Chow ring A(X) and the integral cohomology ring H(X). If G is a linear algebraic group acting on a complex smooth variety X, there are variants of these, called the equivariant Chow ring A_G(X) and the equivariant cohomology ring H_G(X). We will give an elementary introduction to the theory, focusing on examples. We will describe applications in algebraic geometry, to the calculations of Chow rings of important moduli spaces, to questions in representation theory, and to enumerative geometry and Gromov-Witten theory.
