Why I Hate Engagement Rings
According to recent surveys, nearly 30% of Americans have at some point videotaped themselves having sex. While this is good news for voyeurs everywhere (and our amateur sex tapes might have been a better propaganda item to drop over Iraq than the threatening leaflets the Bush administration eventually OK'ed), it also takes the 'conspicuous' part of 'conspicuous consumption' to an entirely new level. For better or for worse, we are becoming Generation "Look at Me, Look at Me!"
In my eyes, shady videotapes are proof that we're more comfortable now than ever with the risk of being exposed to public ridicule. I'm not trying to suggest the Romans wouldn't have recorded their orgies if they could have, I'm suggesting that things we once considered private now lie in a strange gray area.
How does this all relate to engagement rings? It's the reason I hate them. As mentioned in Slate's wedding issue, people only started wearing diamond engagement rings in the 1930's. It was a lonely spinster (no doubt working late one Christmas night, because that's what unmarried women did back then) who came up with the line, "A Diamond is Forever." The theory was that diamonds, like marriage, were a "'til death do you part" sort of deal. Now, of course, the reverse is often true of marriage. But diamonds have stayed steadfast.
Despite their reassuring permanence, engagement rings perturb me. Maybe it's because neither my mother nor my grandmother had one, so I don't associate rings with some tearjerking romantic tradition. Mostly, it strikes me as crass to ask your fiancee you buy you a hunk of gleaming ore as proof of his love ("Baby, I think men with large...credit card debt...are so attractive...") I know that's not how wearers of engagement rings see it - and after all, they do have the population advantage.

Rings around kinetochore microtubules in yeast

    • Abstract
Two recent papers characterize a protein complex that is part of the budding yeast kinetochore, the specialization that links chromosomal DNA with one or more spindle microtubules. Both studies present convincing evidence that this complex can assemble into rings or helices that wrap around microtubules. During the cell growth and division cycle, an orderly sequence of events duplicates the chromosomes and other essential cell parts. These synthetic events are followed by a division process whereby the cell, which is already doubled biochemically, becomes two distinct cells. Our laboratory studies the structure and function of the Smith proteins and their pathology as major autoantigens in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Our approaches to this problem are to investigate 1) The cytoplasmic assembly of the Sm proteins with snRNA to form the Sm core particle 2) The disassembly and degradation of the Sm proteins and 3) The genomics of the larger family of LSm proteins. Throughout this work we ask: What is unusual about the Sm proteins that makes them vulnerable to becoming autoantigens in SLE? SnRNP proteins are the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Sm autoantigens Autoimmune antibodies in 30% of the patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) recognize the Sm proteins, subunits of the heteroheptameric ring shared by small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) particles in the cell nucleus, as autoantigens. SLE is now recognized as a syndrome, a set of malfunctions of the immune system resulting in the antigen driven production of autoantibodies. Susceptibility to SLE maps to multiple genes in the immune system and includes defects in antigen clearance. Environmental or stochastic events may also contribute to the onset. The major autoantigens recognized in SLE are single and double stranded DNA and the Sm proteins. We hypothesize that the Sm proteins are prone to becoming autoantigens because they are extremely abundant and exist in a single complex that has three properties: powerful B cell epitopes, T cell epitopes and immunostimulatory RNA species. The major B cell epitopes are the

Talk:Ring (mathematics) - Definition
From my experience, the definition of a ring that does not include associativity and the existance of a unit is the most common. Wouldn't it be advisable the encyclopedia be changed to match that definition, or are there objections to this? - schnee
I prefer the more general definition, but I'm not sure it's the most common. Changing the definition used by Wikipedia would take quite a lot of work, as there are a great many articles which mention rings and almost all of them would need to be reworded. Even listing all articles that need to be changed (which is the necessary first step) would be a fair amount of work. In any case, there would first need to be a consensus that this is the right thing to do. Zundark 21:08 24 May 2003 (UTC)
I agree, it would certainly be a lot of work. Who would have to be asked for a concensus on this change, though? Also, on an unrelated note, is it actually being made sure that the definitions used in the articles match the one given on this page? - schnee
You would need to get agreement from most of those who are involved in editing the mathematics articles, particularly Axel Boldt, who has generally been the active. For myself, I feel sure that it's not usual to omit associativity, so I would be against making the change that you suggest.

If being mean is stating an opinion based on the statements presented, than mean I am. But, my intent was, when it mattered, to receive the information I requested, for the first time, on the 19th, from BB on this forum and via the Customer Service email link off of BB website. So that I could decide whether or not I needed to go in store in order to have the present in time. I did begin to be very frustrated after not receiving any reply. Especially as I read the posts relating to the same problem. Those 'employees' who claim they are just here to help, do nothing but insult the customers IQ by merely cutting and pasting, or just rewording, BB policy. Which really, I think most people have enough sense to find and read the policies for themselves. And when, under the umbrella of these policies, employees refuse to listen/read fully to a customers' problem/concern/question, it causes a great deal of resentment. I do find myself spending way too much time with this forum, but it's my nature, and career, to help justice and fair practices be valued and adhered to.

The ring's the thing by Juliet Crichton
Any bona fide Hokie will concur: A Virginia Tech class ring is worth its weight in gold. Ever since the Class of 1911 at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (VPI) designed the school's first class ring a year after graduating, the ring tradition has been held in high esteem by the Virginia Tech community. During the ensuing decades, the Tech class ring evolved into a readily recognized symbol of the university's heritage, as well as a respected emblem of great accomplishment. "The Virginia Tech class ring bonds our alumni with distinctive designs specific to graduation years," says Tech's Vice President for Alumni Relations Thomas Tillar Jr. (biology '69; M.A. student personnel services '73; Ed.D. administrative and educational services '78). "I can tell our class ring is a cherished tradition because of the number of alumni who contact us to replace or resize their rings many years after their graduation. They always comment on how proud they are of their ring as a symbol of their loyalty to Virginia Tech." Even though Tech's class ring collection is redesigned each year by each graduating class, the ring's basic story has remained remarkably unchangedthe unveiling, the celebration, and, ultimately, the honor.
