Examples include developments in likelihood methods for inference, epidemiologic statistics, clinical trials, survival analysis, and statistical genetics. Substantive problems in public health and biomedical research have fueled the development of statistical methods, which in turn have improved our ability to draw valid inferences from data. The objective of Biostatistics is to advance statistical science and its application to problems of human health and disease, with the ultimate goal of advancing the public's health.

Department of Biostatistics
... Biostatistics creates and applies methods for quantitative research in the health sciences. Our faculty conduct research across the spectrum of statistical science from foundations of inference to the discovery of new methodology to health applications. Our designs and analytic methods enable health scientists and professionals in academia, government, pharmaceutical companies, medical research organizations and elsewhere to efficiently acquire knowledge and draw valid conclusions from their ever-expanding sources of information. The Department of Biostatistics offers doctoral (PhD) and master of science (ScM) degrees as well as a master of health science (MHS) in biostatistics for students earning a PhD in another department of the School. Our graduates have leadership careers as researchers in academic biostatistics departments, government, and industry.

Department of Biostatistics, UCLA School of Public Health
The UCLA Division of Biostatistics was established in the School of Public Health (SPH) in 1959 and awarded its first Ph.D. degree in 1963. The department was established to carry out the following goals:
  • Develop a graduate program to meet the demand for well-trained biostatisticians. Develop biostatistical research programs responsive to the scientific problems encountered in public health and biomedicine. Actively collaborate with investigators at UCLA and worldwide to solve global health problems.
With over 25 faculty and 60 students, our department today is a leader in biostatistical training for academia, government and industry. UCLA is at the forefront of scientific research and policy issues in Public Health, Biology and Medicine. The Biostatistics department is centrally located in the UCLA "Center for Health Sciences", which facilitates collaborations among all health science departments including Public Health, Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, the Neuropsychiatric Institute, Jonson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the AIDS Institute. Faculty members collaborate with investigators in an extremely large number of diverse disciplines, and as a result biostatistics students have ample research opportunities. Our research programs in Bayesian methods, causal inference, genetics, hierarchical models, HIV/AIDS, longitudinal data analysis, phylogeny, survival analysis, and optimal design are well-respected nationally and internationally. We continue to grow in terms of our faculty, students and programs to meet current and future needs.
