This subject constitutes a major part of modern mathematics education . It has two major branches, differential calculus and integral calculus , which are related by the fundamental theorem of calculus . Calculus is the study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of operations and their application to solving equations. A course in calculus is a gateway to other, more advanced courses in mathematics devoted to the study of functions and limits, broadly called mathematical analysis . Calculus has widespread applications in science economics , and engineering and can solve many problems for which algebra alone is insufficient.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 01:50PM By popular demand, this week's slate of updates heralds the return of music to Calculus-Help.com. Now available on the main links bar at the top of every page, you'll find a link to " Fun ." Follow this link to listen to, or download, the (oddly) ever popular Quadratic Formula song. You may also want to settle down to the soothing lyrics of The Day Before Notebooks Are Due Blues or The A.P. Calculus Theme Song . It's not even close to the holiday season, but does that mean you can't go and enjoy some holiday carols involving Calculus? (Hint: no.) If mathematical music is not your thing, that's okayit's not most people's thing either. The new page o' fun also ushers in the return of the Interactive Cheat Sheet , a flash-based application that presents the most important calculus formulas in one location. In honor of music's return to Calculus-Help.com, keep your eyes fixed on this very page, because a contest is looming. Perhaps you have a calculus song burning in your very soul. You just may get the chance to unburden said soul for prizes!

Calculus
Description of the Examination
The Calculus examination covers skills and concepts that are usually taught in a one-semester college course in calculus. The content of each examination is approximately 60% limits and differential calculus and 40% integral calculus. Algebraic, trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic, and general functions are included. The exam is primarily concerned with an intuitive understanding of calculus and experience with its methods and applications. Knowledge of preparatory mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and analytic geometry is assumed.

Calculus In general, "a" calculus is an abstract theory developed in a purely formal way. "The" calculus, more properly called analysis (or real analysis or, in older literature, infinitesimal analysis ), is the branch of mathematics studying the rate of change of quantities (which can be interpreted as slopes of curves) and the length, area , and volume of objects. The calculus is sometimes divided into differential and integral calculus , concerned with derivatives and integrals respectively. While ideas related to calculus had been known for some time (Archimedes' method of exhaustion was a form of calculus), it was not until the independent work of Newton and Leibniz that the modern elegant tools and ideas of calculus were developed. Even so, many years elapsed until the subject was put on a mathematically rigorous footing by mathematicians such as Weierstrass. This short introductory text focuses mainly on integration and differentiation of functions of a single variable, although iterated integrals are discussed. Infinitesimals are used when appropriate, and are treated more rigorously than in old books like Thompson's Calculus Made Easy , but in less detail than in Keisler's Elementary Calculus: An Approach Using Infinitesimals Numerical examples are given using the open-source computer algebra system Yacas , and Yacas is also used sometimes to cut down on the drudgery of symbolic techniques such as partial fractions. Proofs are given for all important results, but are often relegated to the back of the book, and the emphasis is on teaching the techniques of calculus rather than on abstract results. The book is designed more for self-study than for classroom use; full solutions are given for nearly all the end-of-chapter problems. download in Adobe Acrobat format buy a printed copy LaTeX source code Inf, a calculator that can handle infinite and infinitesimal numbers Readers interested in the infinitesimal approach may also want to look at two other online books: Keisler , and A Brief Introduction to Infinitesimal Calculus by Stroyan.

AP Calculus
AP Calculus AB , also called AB Calc, is an advanced placement calculus exam taken by some United States high school students. It comes after Precalculus, which is known as Introduction to Analysis in some places, and is the first calculus course offered at most schools. An AP Calculus AB course is typically equivalent to one semester of college calculus. The material includes limits, differentiation, integration, applications of the previous, and other topics covered in standard college calculus courses. AP Calculus BC , sometimes called BC Calc, includes all of the topics in AP Calculus AB, as well as convergence tests for series, Taylor and/or Maclaurin series, parametric, vector, polar functions, and curve length. In addition, L'Hôpital's rule, improper integrals, and using partial fractions to integrate rational functions are commonly taught in this course. Students in AP Calculus BC generally receive two semesters of Advanced Placement in mathematics. Calculus Topics Covered: Links Online Colleges

You can also download them in pdf format at the downloads section. Our understanding of Nature relies on calculus, which in turn relies on the intuitive concept of the derivative. It's descriptive power comes from the fact that it analyses the behavior at scales small enough that its properties change linearly, so avoiding complexities that arise at larger ones. Fractional Calculus generalizes this concept from integer to non-integer order. Despite it seems not to have significant applications in fundamental physics, research on this core concept could be valuable in understanding Nature. These notes comprise an introduction to the field.

    Fractional calculus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Fractional calculus is a branch of mathematical analysis that studies the possibility of taking real number powers or complex number powers of the differential operator and the integration operator J . (Usually J is used instead of I to avoid confusion with other I -like glyphs and identities In this context the term powers refers to iterative application or composition, in the same sense that f (x) = f(f(x)).
For example, one may ask the question of meaningfully interpreting as a square root of the differentiation operator (an operator half iterate ), i.e., an expression for some operator that when applied twice to a function will have the same effect as differentiation . More generally, one can look at the question of defining for real-number values of a in such a way that when a takes an integer value n , the usual power of n -fold differentiation is recovered for n n th power of J when n There are various reasons for looking at this question. One is that in this way the semigroup of powers D n in the discrete variable n is seen inside a continuous semigroup (one hopes) with parameter a which is a real number. Continuous semigroups are prevalent in mathematics, and have an interesting theory. Notice here that
