Wednesday, 27 October 2010 00:00 Pregnant with my first child, I used to stop mothers with small children in random places and inquire about their pediatricians.  I took notes and created a spreadsheet with questions I would ask when interviewing doctors.  As a young expectant mother I was totally prepared for everything life with children threw my way.  I had a spreadsheet that proved it! How many doctors in the practice? What doctor would see us during an "emergency"? Are sick children separated from well visit children? Will I talk to an actual registered nurse when I call in the middle of the night? Is it difficult to get an appointment on the same day? It never occurred to me to ask: Are you able to sew on a finger tip if my child accidentally cuts it off with the mother of all craft scissors while making Halloween masks out of durable paper plates? Does your office use staples on heads when guitars safely placed in a bookshelf fall on top of wild banshees? And.  Isn't a mother supposed to get a chance to breathe before back-to-back ER visits?  Isn't that an unwritten parenting rule?

Project output should include software mirror, architectural and design documentation and operating instructions where necessary. Description: This project started as tool development work for the IT Security group at Macquarie University in 2003 - a team that included Rob Dartnell, Ian Latter and Ty Miller. The need there was to demonstrate the weakness in one particular application's security, via its one hashed, network transmitted, password. The openMosix cluster software, at that time, was available via a number of Linux distributions, but these were neither secure nor dynamic enough to support the campus PC environment that the cluster software was to be deployed into. The CHAOS distribution was created to fill this need, and was developed for almost two years under the GPL to allow the openMosix community members to benefit from the security enhancements employed around the openMosix software (the clustering technology that is added to the Linux kernel). Security improvements made by the team included IPSEC tunnels for all cluster communications, state aware packet filtering for each node, a tiny OS image which allowed for PXE booting to remote PC memory, zero-touch cluster creation, etc.
