Combinatorics is a branch of pure mathematics concerning the study of discrete (and usually finite) objects. It is related to many other areas of mathematics , such as algebra probability theory ergodic theory and geometry , as well as to applied subjects in computer science and statistical physics. Aspects of combinatorics include "counting" the objects satisfying certain criteria ( enumerative combinatorics ), deciding when the criteria can be met, and constructing and analyzing objects meeting the criteria (as in combinatorial designs and matroid theory ), finding "largest", "smallest", or "optimal" objects ( extremal combinatorics and combinatorial optimization ), and finding algebraic structures these objects may have ( algebraic combinatorics Combinatorics is as much about problem solving as theory building, though it has developed powerful theoretical methods, especially since the later twentieth century (see the page List of combinatorics topics for details of the more recent development of the subject). One of the oldest and most accessible parts of combinatorics is

About the Journal
The Australasian Journal of Combinatorics is an international journal which publishes original research papers in all branches of combinatorics. We also consider timely survey articles and short expository pieces. All papers are fully refereed. Submission of a manuscript to the Australasian Journal of Combinatorics implies that the paper has not been published elsewhere, is not currently submitted for publication elsewhere, and, if accepted by the Journal, will not also be published elsewhere. The Australasian Journal of Combinatorics began publication in 1990, with two volumes a year from 1990 to 2004, and three volumes a year from 2005 on. Volumes now appear each year in February, June and October. Volumes over four years old are available free online here

The development has been supervised by Alain Lascoux and Jean-Yves Thibon W hen using the ACE system, thank you for including references to ACE in your articles. T MAPLE packages, dealing respectively with the symmetric group, Schubert polynomials and noncommutative symmetric functions. These packages were available in July 1994. We made up our minds to develop a more general project about algebraic combinatorics on October 1994. The aim was to build an ``easy to use'' Algebraic Combinatorics Environment. We have chosen MAPLE because this system is widely used by combinatorists and it has a convenient user's interface. We had in mind to develop an efficient toolbox of functions for research in algebraic combinatorics. The interface had to be very flexible for first experimentations, whereas it may be more interesting to use some specific programs for large scale computations: for instance, we refer the reader to the SYMMETRICA system that is well suited for such computations.

    Combinatorics
Combinatorics involves the general study of discrete objects. Reasoning about such objects occurs throughout mathematics and science. For example, major biological problems involving decoding the genome and phylogenetic trees are largely combinatorial. Researchers in quantum gravity have developed deep combinatorial methods to evaluate integrals, and many problems in statistical mechanics are discretized into combinatorial problems. Three of the four 2006 Fields Medals were awarded for work closely related to combinatorics: Okounkov's work on random matrices and Kontsevich's conjecture, Tao's work on primes in arithmetic progression, and Werner's work on percolation. Our department has been on the leading edge of combinatorics for the last forty years. The late Gian-Carlo Rota is regarded as the founding father of modern enumerative/algebraic combinatorics, transforming it from a bag of ad hoc tricks to a deep, unified subject with important connections to other areas of mathematics. Our department has been the nexus for developing connections between combinatorics, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, and representation theory that have led to the solution of major long-standing problems. We are also a leader in extremal, probabilistic, and algorithmic combinatorics, which have close ties to other areas including computer science.

68. Annals Of Combinatorics
Contributions to combinatorial mathematics in all its aspects. Editor s page author, subscription and contact information, tables of contents of all volumes.
http://www.combinatorics.net/aoc/
Aims and Scopes Annals of Combinatorics will publish outstanding contributions to combinatorial mathematics in all its aspects. Special regard will be given to new developments which have yet to be given proper recognition, but which in the opinion of the editors show promise of eventual mathematical breakthroughs. Papers published in Annals of Combinatorics will not be limited to the field of combinatorics in the strict sense. They will range over problems and theories that have arisen, or will arise, in applications to computer science, biology, statistics, probability, physics and chemistry, as well as over work of a combinatorial nature in representation theory, number theory, topology, algebraic geometry and the theory of special functions. Annals of Combinatorics will also publish research announcements, book reviews, as well as revealing and inspiring expositions. This journal will at all times ensure the efficient and speedy processing of submitted manuscripts. For further information, please contact

Combinatorics
Combinatorics is a branch of mathematics that studies finite collections of objects that satisfy certain criteria, and is in particular concerned with "counting" the objects in those collections ( enumerative combinatorics ) and with deciding whether certain "optimal" objects exist ( extremal combinatorics ). One of the most prominent combinatorialists of recent times was Gian-Carlo Rota , who helped formalize the subject beginning in the enumeration A quite comprehensive listing by Wikipedia page is list of combinatorics topics An example of a combinatorial question is the following: What is the number of possible orderings of a deck of 52 playing cards? That number equals 52! (i.e., "fifty-two factorial , is so large. That is a little bit more than 8 followed by 67 zeros. Comparing that number to some other large numbers, it is greater than the square of Avogadro's number , "the number of atoms, molecules, etc., in a gram mole". Table of contents 1 Counting functions
