Complex analysis
Complex analysis , traditionally known as the theory of functions of a complex variable , is the branch of mathematics investigating functions of complex numbers . It is useful in many branches of mathematics, including number theory and applied mathematics , and in physics Complex analysis is particularly concerned with the analytic functions of complex variables, which are commonly divided into two main classes: the holomorphic functions and the meromorphic functions . Because the separable real and imaginary parts of any analytic function must satisfy Laplace's equation , complex analysis is widely applicable to two-dimensional problems in physics

Complex functions
A complex function is a function in which the independent variable and the dependent variable are both complex numbers. More precisely, a complex function is a function defined on a subset of the complex plane with complex values. For any complex function, both the independent variable and the dependent variable may be separated into real and imaginary parts: It follows that the components of the function, The extension of real functions (exponentials, logarithms, trigonometric functions) to the complex domain is frequently used as an introduction to complex analysis.

Holomorphic functions are complex functions defined on an open subset of the complex plane which are differentiable. Complex differentiability has much stronger consequences than usual (real) differentiability. For instance, holomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable, a fact that is far from true for real differentiable functions. Most elementary functions, including the

"Complex Analysis" offers new and interesting motivations for classical results and introduces related topics that do not appear in this form in other texts. Stressing motivation and technique, and complete with exercise sets, this volume may be used both as a basic text and as a reference. For this second edition, the authors have revised some of the existing material and have provided new exercises and solutions. (less) Hardcover, 312 pages

Complex analysis
Complex analysis is the branch of mathematics investigating holomorphic functions, i.e. functions which are defined in some region of the complex plane , take complex values, and are differentiable as complex functions. Complex differentiability has much stronger consequences than usual (real) differentiability . For instance, every holomorphic function is representable as power series in every open disc in its domain of definition, and is therefore analytic . In particular, holomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable, a fact that is far from true for real differentiable functions. Most elementary functions, such as all polynomials , the exponential function , and the trigonometric functions , are holomorphic. See also : holomorphic sheaves and vector bundles. One central tool in complex analysis is the path integral . The integral around a closed path of a function which is holomorphic everywhere inside the area bounded by the closed path is always zero; this is the Cauchy integral theorem . The values of a holomorphic function inside a disk can be computed by a certain path integral on the disk's boundary ( Cauchy's integral formula ). Path integrals in the complex plane are often used to determine complicated real integrals, and here the theory of residues is useful. If a function has a

Complex analysis is concerned with the basic properties of complex functions of one variable. The principal difference between real and complex analysis lies in the concept of differentiability, which is a much stronger property for complex functions. For this reason, complex analysis becomes more powerful and - sometimes - even simpler than real analysis. For instance, the differentiability of a complex function allows one to draw conclusions about its Taylor series and its analytic continuations. The lecture treats the following topics:
  • Complex numbers and holomorphic functions Analytic functions Complex integration Contour integration, calculus of residues
