This article largely discusses complex systems as a subject of mathematics and the attempts to emulate physical complex systems with emergent properties. For other scientific and professional disciplines addressing complexity in their fields see the complex systems article and references.
A complex system is a system composed of interconnected parts that as a whole exhibit one or more properties (behavior among the possible properties) not obvious from the properties of the individual parts. A system’s complexity may be of one of two forms: disorganized complexity and organized complexity In essence, disorganized complexity is a matter of a very large number of parts, and organized complexity is a matter of the subject system (quite possibly with only a limited number of parts) exhibiting

Overview
Many natural phenomena may be called "Complex systems", and "Complexity science" is highly interdisciplinary. Examples of complex systems include ant hills ants themselves, Human economies Nervous systems cells and so forth, as well as human beings and their psychology, emotions, bodies and interactions. Beyond the fact that these things are all networks of some kind, and that they are complex, it may appear that they have little in common, and hence that the term "Complex System" is vacuous. However, all complex systems are held to have behavioural and structural features in common, which at least to some degree unites them as phenomena. They are also united theoretically, because all these systems may in principle be modelled with varying degress of success by a certain kind of mathematics, and so it is possible to state clearly what it is that these systems are supposed to have in common with each other in relatively formal terms.

Emergence What distinguishes a complex system from a merely complicated one is that some behaviors and patterns emerge in complex systems as a result of the patterns of relationship between the elements. Emergence is perhaps the key property of complex systems and a lot of work is being done to try to understand more about its nature and the conditions which will help it to occur. Relationships are short-range Typically, the relationships between elements in a complex system are short-range, that is information is normally received from near neighbours. The richness of the connections means that communications will pass across the system but will probably be modified on the way. Relationships are non-linear There are rarely simple cause and effect relationships between elements. A small stimulus may cause a large effect, or no effect at all.

Complex System
A complex system is a system composed of interconnected parts that as a whole exhibit one or more properties (behavior among the possible properties) not obvious from the properties of the individual parts
Examples of complex systems include ant colonies, human economies and social structures, climate, nervous systems, cells and living things, including human beings, as well as modern energy or telecommunication infrastructures. Indeed, many systems of interest to humans are complex systems.
Complex systems are studied by many areas of natural science, mathematics, and social science. Fields that specialize in the interdisciplinary study of complex systems include systems theory, complexity theory, systems ecology, and cybernetics
Overview
A complex system is any system featuring a large number of interacting components, whose aggregate activity is non-linear and typically exhibits self-organization under selective pressures. Now the term complex systems has multiple meaning: * A specific kind of systems, that are complex

    Nonlinear and Complex Systems
How does a network of interacting genes produce viable cells? How do networks of neurons in the brain process information? Why does flowing sand sometime get jammed in a static state? How can coupling many simple sensors produce a network that outperforms traditional approaches? These questions, and the sometimes surprising relations between them, lie in the domain of complex systems research. The challenge is to discover and characterize the collective behavior of complex systems, and to uncover the principles that connect the physics and logic of interactions between parts to the properties of the full system. This rapidly developing research area relies heavily on the concepts and language of nonlinear dynamics, and the evolution of this area of research at Duke began with physicists, geophysicists, mathematicians, and engineers recognizing they shared a common language. Experiments in these areas are typically carried out by individual students who have the opportunity to explore all aspects of a project, including design, construction, and data analysis. Theoretical progress relies on the adaptation and extension of principles of dynamical systems theory and statistical mechanics, distilling the crucial features of the system into models that can be studied analytically or using manageable numerical computations.
