Computational Science Humans think arithmeticly, but God thinks logarithmicly. Computational science is different from computer science. The latter is the science of computation (e.g., the invention of efficient search and sort algorithms, techniques of parallel processing, etc.). The former is the use primarily of computation, rather than of theorizing or experimentation, to attain scientific knowledge. Computational science has been made possible by the development of high-speed computers, and is still at an early stage of development.
    • Five Cellular Automata , software which allows exploration of several cellular automata: (a) A generalization of Conway's Life, called q-state Life
      (b) A simulation of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction in which, beginning from a random state of the system, spirals and curlicues emerge spontaneously.
      (c) A process called Togetherness in which colored cells, starting from a random distribution, rearrange themselves so as to form clusters of cells of the same color.
      (d) A simulation of the population dynamics of dividing cells subject to viral infection

    1. Introduction
Computation is now regarded as an equal and indispensable partner, along with theory and experiment, in the advance of scientific knowledge and engineering practice. Numerical simulation enables the study of complex systems and natural phenomena that would be too expensive or dangerous, or even impossible, to study by direct experimentation. The quest for ever higher levels of detail and realism in such simulations requires enormous computational capacity, and has provided the impetus for dramatic breakthroughs in computer algorithms and architectures. Due to these advances, computational scientists and engineers can now solve large-scale problems that were once thought intractable. Computational science and engineering (CSE) is a rapidly growing multidisciplinary area with connections to the sciences, engineering, mathematics and computer science. CSE focuses on the development of problem-solving methodologies and robust tools for the solution of scientific and engineering problems. We believe that CSE will play an important if not dominating role for the future of the scientific discovery process and engineering design. It is natural that SIAM, as the society whose aim is to foster the computational and applied mathematics which is at the core of CSE, should play a role in the growth and development of this new discipline. The objectives of this report are to attempt to define the core areas and scope of CSE, to provide ideas, advice and information regarding curriculum and graduate programs in CSE, and to give recommendations regarding the potential for SIAM to contribute.

    Introduction from the Editor-in-Chief
The Journal of Computational Science Education is intended to provide an outlet for high quality papers describing successful computational science instructional materials and projects and research on the efficacy of instruction with computational science. Articles will be accepted from faculty describing instructional materials and/or the impacts of those materials on student learning and from students presenting successful projects and their assessment of what was learned. We have assembled an editorial board of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers with a broad array of experiences from their own disciplines. They will lead the peer review process for journal submissions. If you have the background and experience to be a reviewer for the journal, we encourage you to volunteer to do so at

    Workshop April 11-14, 2007
This four-day workshop was held at the University of Tennessee. The workshop was designed for natural resource managers and academic researchers and students working on problems in resource management. The overall objective was to provide a rapid introduction to the application of computational approaches to the problems and practices associated with managing natural resources including harvest regulation, control of invasive species, fire management, disease ecology, and scenario analysis. The workshop will be led by a group of distinguished faculty with broad expertise in computational science and biological modeling. The workshop included hands-on sessions with computational tools in addition to formal lectures and discussion sessions. Significant financial support for travel, registration and housing expenses was provided.
