The AIM Research Conference Center (ARCC) will host a focused workshop on Algorithmic Convex Geometry, November 5 to November 9, 2007.

    Algorithmic Convex Geometry
November 5 to November 9, 2007 at the American Institute of Mathematics , Palo Alto, California organized by Assaf Naor and Santosh Vempala This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF , is motivated by algorithms and draws heavily on probability (especially the theory of stochastic processes), convex geometry and functional analysis. The workshop will bring together leading researcher in these areas. On one hand, algorithms researchers will clearly benefit from this. What is equally exciting is that algorithmic insights have started returning the favor - they have led to questions and advances in convex geometry and probability, notably in the form of isoperimetric inequalities and rapidly-mixing geometric random walks. The workshop will identify and focus on such directions (two specific problems are stated below) showing new directions for analysts, geometers and probabilists. It is our hope that such a confluence will make substantial progress in shaping this field. Geometric random walks are maturing into a powerful tool for algorithm design (see the survey by Vempala ). Their analysis hinges on isoperimetric inequalities for the state space. For all partitions of the state space into measurable subsets with a fixed proportion of measure, what is the minimum possible measure of the separating surface? E.g., for a convex body

Text: Part 1 of the textbook can be downloaded here: pdf (stay tuned for updates...) This course provides an introduction to the geometry of convex sets in Euclidean space. Topics will include the convex sets and convex functions, Jensen's inequality and its relatives, support and separation, Minkowski sums, polygons and polyhedra, volume, surface area, mean width and related functionals, isoperimetry, containment, geometric probability, and inverse questions regarding shadows and cross-sections of convex bodies (integral geometry and geometric tomography). Prerequisites are Calculus III and some linear algebra. Some real analysis background is helpful, but not required. The course is co-listed for both undergraduate and graduate students. There will be no exams. Grades will be based on homeworks, collected in class each week.

    http://www.convexoptimization.com/dattorro/distance_geometry.html
Home Wikimization Contact Us Accumulator error feedback ... Home Distance Geometry Distance Geometry Euclidean distance geometry is, fundamentally, a determination of point conformation (configuration, relative position or location) by inference from interpoint distance information. By inference we mean: eg, given only distance information, determine whether there corresponds a realizable conformation of points; a list of points in some dimension that attains the given interpoint distances. Each point may represent simply location or, abstractly, any entity expressible as a vector in finite-dimensional Euclidean space. It is a common misconception to presume that some desired point conformation cannot be recovered in the absence of complete interpoint distance information. We might, for example, realize a constellation given only interstellar distance (or, equivalently, distance from Earth and relative angular measurement; the Earth as vertex to two stars). At first it may seem O(N^2) data is required, yet there are many circumstances where this can be reduced to O(N). If we agree that a set of points can have a shape three points can form a triangle and its interior, for example, four points a tetrahedron), then we can ascribe shape of a set of points to their convex hull. It should be apparent: these shapes can be determined only to within a rigid transformation (a rotation, reflection, and a translation).
