      Alexander Koldobsky (University of Missouri)
      Dmitry Ryabogin (Kent State University)
      Artem Zvavitch (Kent State University)
      Objectives
The main goal of the proposed workshop at BIRS would be to invite the leading experts and young researchers in the area to coordinate the main applications of Harmonic Analysis to convex geometry and to develop new Fourier analytic approaches to the main open problems in the area. The format of the meeting will be as follows. We are planning to have two to three plenary lectures every day followed by shorter talks. In addition we would like to allocate time for open problem sessions and informal discussions. The proposed workshop will focus on several topics in Harmonic, Geometric and Functional Analysis. Fourier analytic methods proved useful in the study of sections and projections of convex bodies, volumes and surface area measures, embeddings of normed spaces in $L_p$ and other topics. Below we outline a few main directions of the workshop that represent research interests of the majority of the proposed participants. 1) Sections and projections of convex bodies.

52: Convex and discrete geometry
Introduction
Convex and discrete geometry includes the study of convex subsets of Euclidean space. A wealth of famous results distinguishes this family of sets (e.g. Brouwer's fixed-point theorem, the isoperimetric problems). This classification also includes the study of polygons and polyhedra, and frequently overlaps discrete mathematics and group theory; through piece-wise linear manifolds, it intersects topology. This area also includes tilings and packings in Euclidean space.

Description: This course will address the design of provably efficient algorithms for data processing that leverage prior information. We will focus on the specific areas of compressed sensing, stochastic algorithms for matrix factorization, rank minimization, and non-parametric machine learning. We will emphasize the pivotal roles of convexity and randomness in problem formulation, estimation guarantees, and algorithm design. The course will provide a unified exposition of these growing research areas and is ideal for advanced graduate students who would like to apply these theoretical and algorithmic developments to their own research. The course will roughly be broken into the following structure:
  • Foundations: (2 weeks) Embeddings, Encodings, Random Projections, Coverings Sparsity : (3 weeks) Classical interpolation methods and Prony's method. Compressed Sensing and L1 Minimization. Restricted Isometries. Rank: ( 3 weeks) Krylov Subspaces and Lanczos methods. Stochastic algorithms for factorization. Matrix Completion.

Handbook of Convex Geometry, Volume B Book
One aim of this Handbook is to survey convex geometry, its many ramifications and its relations with other areas of mathematics. We believe that it will be a
useful tool for the expert. A second aim is to give a high level introduction to most branches of convexity and its applications, showing the major ideas, methods
and results. We hope that because of this feature the Handbook will act as an appetizer for future researchers in convex geometry.

    MULTIOBJECTIVE PROBLEMS OF
    CONVEX GEOMETRY
    S. S. Kutateladze
The birth of the theory of extremal problems is usually tied with the mythical Phoenician Princess Dido. Dido had to decide about the choice of a tract of land near the future city of Carthage Now it is customary to think that the decision by Dido was reduced to the isoperimetric problem of finding a figure of greatest area among those surrounded by a curve whose length is given. It is not excluded that Dido and her subjects solved the practical versions of the problem when the tower was to be located at the sea coast and part of the boundary coastline of the tract was somehow prescribed in advance. The foundation of Carthage is usually dated to the ninth century B.C.E. when there was no hint of the Euclidean geometry, the cadastral surveying was the job of harpedonaptae, and measuring the tracts of land was used in decision making. Rope-stretching around stakes leads to convex figures. The Dido problem has a unique solution in the class of convex figures provided that the fixed nonempty part of the boundary is a convex polygonal line. Decision making has become a science in the twentieth century. The presence of many contradictory conditions and conflicting interests is the main particularity of the social situations under control of today. Management by objectives is an exceptional instance of the stock of rather complicated humanitarian problems of goal agreement which has no candidates for a unique solution.

Pictures Posted! (March 23rd, 2004) Thank you for another great workshop. Mike Develin, Walter Morris Jr., Jon Lee, Jakayla Robbins, and Tibor Szabo gave tutorials during the week and all the research talks were informative and interesting. Have a look at some of the topics we discussed, posted below under Workshop Program . In 2005 we hope to make it three successful workshops in a row at Bellairs Research Institute, McGill University, Barbados. Until then, take care!
