In contrast to real numbers that have the property of varying "smoothly", the objects studied in discrete mathematics – such as integers graphs , and statements in logic – do not vary smoothly in this way, but have distinct, separated values. Discrete mathematics therefore excludes topics in "continuous mathematics" such as calculus and analysis . Discrete objects can often be enumerated by integers. More formally, discrete mathematics has been characterized as the branch of mathematics dealing with countable sets (sets that have the same cardinality as subsets of the integers, including rational numbers but not real numbers). However, there is no exact, universally agreed, definition of the term "discrete mathematics." Indeed, discrete mathematics is described less by what is included than by what is excluded: continuously varying quantities and related notions.

    OVERVIEW
The objective of the meeting is to gather researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students from the Ontario/Quebec area working in various elds of discrete mathematics in order to stimulate research collaboration in this vibrant interdisciplinary area. The meeting takes place on Friday and Saturday to encourage participation of researchers from outside the Ottawa region. The invited speakers are known for their eloquence of presentation and excellence in research. They are chosen carefully to cover a broad range of topics and aspects of discrete mathematics.

Discrete Mathematics Discrete mathematics is the branch of mathematics dealing with objects that can assume only distinct, separated values. The term "discrete mathematics" is therefore used in contrast with "continuous mathematics," which is the branch of mathematics dealing with objects that can vary smoothly (and which includes, for example, calculus ). Whereas discrete objects can often be characterized by integers , continuous objects require real numbers The study of how discrete objects combine with one another and the probabilities of various outcomes is known as combinatorics . Other fields of mathematics that are considered to be part of discrete mathematics include graph theory and the theory of computation . Topics in number theory such as congruences and recurrence relations are also considered part of discrete mathematics. The study of topics in discrete mathematics usually includes the study of algorithms , their implementations, and efficiencies. Discrete mathematics is the mathematical language of computer science, and as such, its importance has increased dramatically in recent decades.

    Featured Activities: Pascal's Triangle Activities
These seasonal activities were developed to provide students opportunities to analyze and learn the patterns of Pascal's Triangle. Through repeated exposure to this important mathematical pattern, students will build understanding of the pattern and will more easily relate its use to mathematical problems they meet in the future.
    Discrete Math
These activities help students use organized lists and systematic counting to solve combination problems. Map coloring and networks are also discrete math problems that students can relate to real-world applications.
    • Pascal's Pumpkins encourages students to look for patterns in Pascal's Triangle. The handout develops awareness of this important mathematical pattern through this timely seasonal activity. Students who take higher math courses will meet Pascal again in many different applications, including probability. This handout is an outgrowth of the Rutgers Discrete Math Institute.

Discrete Mathematics is a rapidly growing and increasingly used area of mathematics, with many practical and relevant applications.
    • Because it is grounded in real-world problems, discrete mathematics lends itself easily to implementing the recommendations fo the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. (The recently published Standards and Principles for School Mathematics notes that "As an active branch of contemporary mathematics that is widely used in business and industry, discrete mathematics should be an integral part of the school mathematics curriculum.") Because many discrete math problems are simply stated and have few mathematical prerequisites, they can be introduced at all grade levels, even with children who are not yet fluent readers.
Discrete mathematics will make math concepts come alive for your students. It's an excellent tool for improving reasoning and problem-solving skills, and is appropriate for students at all levels and of all abilities. Teachers have found that discrete mathematics offers a way of motivating unmotivated students while challenging talented students at the same time. Because many discrete math problems are simply stated and have few mathematical prerequisites, they can be easily be introduced at the middle school grade level.
