The schedule The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has recently (1989) elevated discrete mathematics to the level of algebra, geometry, and calculus by including a separate discrete mathematics standard in their Standards document. Indeed, the use of discrete mathematics has an essential part in the development of students' mathematical power in a society grounded in technology and communication. In particular, discrete mathematics includes and addresses: Social Decision Making, Fair Division, Election Theory, Graph Theory, Counting Techniques, Matrix Models, and Mathematical Iteration/Recursion. NORTHWEST RANKIN HIGH SCHOOL DISCRETE MATH OUTLINE I. Course Description Discrete mathematics is the study of mathematics as it applies to systems that have a finite number of elements. A few of the topics that will be explored are set and binary systems, logic, graph theory, simple games, and the geometry of fractals. Technology will be used when appropriate throughout the course. Discrete Mathematics is usually considered important for potential application to computer science, but is not limited to that area. II. Course Competencies Perform operations on sets and investigate properties of fields. Apply the rules of logic to discuss the validity of arguments. Explore and investigate graph theory and its applications. Investigate and explain strategies for solving simple games. Apply and compare approaches to problem-solving situations. Investigate the geometry of fractals. III. Course Procedures Discrete mathematics students will be required to keep a notebook containing definitions and formulas that will be used in the course. IV.

Unurth
Hello everyone. Today, rather than examine a single artist, we are going to look at a site that I have recently gotten into in a big way. Unurth is a site run by Sebastian, and a sort of database of street art from around the world. The volume of art is pretty impressive on its own but what really adds to it is that the artists of each work are identified, (by their pseudonyms of course) which seems pretty daunting considering how often street art is unsigned.
This is from a set featuring Escif and Hyuro. Something that is pretty common on the site is collaborations between artists. I can't think of much more to say about the site as a whole but I just think it is a commendable effort to document some genuinely remarkable art.
Please enjoy,

Bay Area Discrete Math Day
Upcoming:
21st BADMath Day

October 16, 2010, MSRI
Bay Area Discrete Math Days are one-day meetings aimed at facilitating communication between researchers and graduate students of discrete mathematics around the San Francisco Bay Area. These days happen semi-annually and strive to create a fairly informal atmosphere to talk about discrete mathematics. The term "discrete mathematics" is chosen to include at least the following topics: Algebraic and Enumerative Combinatorics, Discrete Geometry, Graph Theory, Coding and Design Theory, Combinatorial Aspects of Computational Algebra and Geometry, Combinatorial Optimization, Probabilistic Combinatorics, and Combinatorics in Mathematical Physics. Information about previous BADMath Days is available below.

    How to Learn Discrete Math
By James Gapinski eHow Contributor updated: August 22, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Discrete math is widely taught as a small component of larger high school mathematics courses, but this type of math is rarely addressed as its own standalone course until college . This is unfortunate, as Dave Patrick, Ph.D., explains "discrete math, in particular counting and probability, allows students [...] to very quickly explore non-trivial 'real world' problems." Discrete math is both important for daily living and college-level math comprehension. Additionally, discrete math is commonly used for computer programming and other important technological skills. Learning discrete math takes time and patience, but the process doesn't have to be overly difficult if you follow the right steps.
