The history of the universe is a history of entropy liberation, which means, simply, that entropy increases. But what does that mean? Many sources will tell you that the increase of entropy is dissipation , degradation, and dissolution, and they're right, but they're not entirely right. It is a glass half empty/full sort of situation, for along with the dissipation, degradation, and dissolution comes everything else.

Introducing Floor for Windows rev 4.0 Floor for Windows rev 4.0, from General Entropy Software, Inc., generates complete, random, equitable floor schedules in moments. Vacations and holidays are a snap. Got choosy agents who can't work Monday mornings and Thursdays after lunch? Floor for Windows has you covered. With four different methods of generating a schedule and three unique means of printing it, you can't go wrong. In addition, you can export a schedule to user's email addresses, the Microsoft Outlook calendar, or Calendar Creator format. The SmartRandom feature of Floor for Windows prevents an agent from receiving shifts on consecutive days or receiving the same shift on other days in the month. With Floor for Windows, you'll get the fairest floor schedule possible. Features Complete configurability. Floor for Windows rev 4.0 supports an unlimited number of agents and up to 24 time slots per day. As you add agents to the list, you may choose to supply an optional email address so that the finished schedule can be emailed directly to the agent. Shift configuration and agent settings are preserved from month to month, and can be easily copied to other licensed computers. Holidays, vacations, and shift restrictions.

The locked-down nature of the iPad has gotten more people talking about the value of being able to modify one's environment. A few people have made a comparison to cars. Joel Johnson wrote in Gizmodo I've been using a similar car analogy to explain the difference between open and propriety software, and I agree with Joel right up until the end, where he gets it completely wrong. When your propriety luxury software breaks, or you want to change it a bit, you can't bring it to your local garage and pay someone to work on it, you have to go to the manufacturer. They might release a free update, or maybe buying next year's model will solve your problem. Often you're just out of luck. You can pay someone to help you use your software, but if needs to be changed, no one can help you without the source code and the license to use it. You may not have the skills or inclination to tinker with your car or your software, but if it's an open system, you can pay someone else to do it.

Can Gravity Decrease Entropy?
John Baez
August 7, 2000
If you weren't careful, you might think gravity could violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Start with a bunch of gas in outer space. Suppose it's homogeneously distributed. If it's big enough, it will start clumping up thanks to its gravitational self-attraction. So starting from complete disorder, it looks like we're getting some order! Doesn't this mean that the entropy of the gas is dropping? Well, it's a bit trickier than you might think. First of all, you have to remember that a gas cloud heats up as it collapses gravitationally! The clumping means you know more and more about the positions of the atoms in the cloud. But the heating up means you know less and less about their velocities. So there are two competing effects. It's not obvious which one wins! Let's do a little calculation to see how this works. The trick is to keep things simple so we can easily see what's going on. This requires some idealizations.
Entropy Calculation - Part 1
We'll assume a ball of some ideal gas with volume V and a total of N identical gas atoms in it. We assume these atoms interact only gravitationally, and we use Newtonian physics everywhere. We'll start out by assuming that the cloud is "virialized", meaning that the kinetic energy K and potential energy P are related by

Introduction Thomas Pynchon achieves an unusual synthesis of art and science, and develops the unique character of his ambitious, "post-modern" works with a renaissance conception of continuous knowledge. Engineering principals animate his fiction in literal explorations, and then escalate into larger thematic matter. The Crying of Lot 49 (1965) traces Entropy through the theoretical Maxwell's Demon device (the greatest historical challenge to the second law of thermodynamics), and also extends the property and Demon to metaphorically control and inform the journey of Oedipa Mass. Pynchon's reader travels an analogous odyssey to the protagonist, sorting information, flirting with chaos and circumnavigating truth.
Entropy
Entropy is a quantity that, in its two contexts, characterizes not only all form and life in the universe, but all signal, language, information and written material ever produced anywhere. There are two fields which define this concept: Thermodynamics is the science of the relations between heat and other forms of energy. It deals with the changes that occur in a system if the energy distribution is unbalanced, therefore it "can be regarded as governing the direction of all physical changes taking place in the universe. With time, the energy within a system will inevitably tend to become distributed in the most probable pattern, which consists of all the individual particles of the system engaging in random, disordered motion" (OED). Thermodynamic entropy is the measure of this disorganization in a system. Furthermore, this "most probable pattern" is actually a state of equal energy among particles, as collisions cause bodies to exchange heat. A closed system inevitably proceeds toward uniformity of energy.

Entropy and the Laws of Thermodynamics
The principal energy laws that govern every organization are derived from two famous laws of thermodynamics. The second law, known as Carnot's principle, is controlled by the concept of entropy. Today the word entropy is as much a part of the language of the physical sciences as it is of the human sciences. Unfortunately, physicists, engineers, and sociologists use indiscriminately a number of terms that they take to be synonymous with entropy, such as disorder, probability, noise, random mixture, heat; or they use terms they consider synonymous with antientropy, such as information, neguentropy, complexity, organization, order, improbability. There are at least three ways of defining entropy:
  • in terms of thermodynamics (the science of heat), where the names of Mayer, Joule, Carnot, and Clausius (1865) are important;
  • in terms of statistical theory, which fosters the equivalence of entropy and disorder as a result of the work of Maxwell, Gibbs, and Boltzmann (1875), and
  • in terms of information theory , which demonstrates the equivalence of neguentropy (the opposite of entropy) and information as a result of the work of Szilard, Gabor, Rothstein, and Brillouin (1940-1950)
The two principal laws of thermodynamics apply only to closed systems, that is, entities with which there can be no exchange of energy, information, or material. The universe in its totality might be considered a closed system of this type; this would allow the two laws to be applied to it.

Entropy
According to the Laws of Thermodynamics entropy , the measure of the disorder in a closed system, and its direction toward increasing disorder cannot be reversed. This theory is not in question, even when the nature of closed systems is at issue. The increase in entropy is contained in the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and effectively states that the arrow of time (time theoretically being one-directional) requires everything to proceed toward ever increasing chaos, such that all structures are ultimately doomed. However, in an open system, there can be an influx of energy into the system capable of reinvigorating the structure in full accord with the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Energy input can decrease entropy, and can simultaneously increase order. Furthermore, the more structured a system, the more energy is required to increase the structure, or even to maintain the status quo what in physics is termed equilibrium. Entropy is not purely a physics term. It can also be applied to everything from gardens to societies. Gardens, for example, which are extremely ordered, i.e. all tomato plants, are highly susceptible to disorder simply because one tomato bug could do in the whole garden.

YOU HAVE ARRIVED

Outpost Entropy is a literary magazine. We believe there is a poetry out there synonymous with our times that accurately reflects the continuity of discontinuity, the multifariousness in which we attempt, and manage to, integrate our lives.
We aim to publish it. WHAT DO WE LIKE?
We try not to let our biases blind us, and be as objective as is possible for us. We attempt to evaluate submissions on the basis of how well they do what they set out to do according to (loosely speaking) the genre they fall into. We like postcards from the edge. We like work that is complex, all over the place, but whole. We can dig the political. We can go for an emphatically expressed anything or rant. We like when we can find a certain harmony in the onslaught that takes it back out yet again. We like to laugh. We like wit and cycnacism well done. We'd like your coolest experiments. We like the experiencial that takes us for the ride. We don't care if you make sense or not as long as there is a complicity in the 'non-sense'. We really have a hard time suspending our prejudices when it comes to the blow by blow, day in the life, overly superficial narrative that has little to no asthetic depth.
