Jerome Turner
St' Francis Xavier University The following is a transcnpt of a presentation made at the Annual Meeting of the NCTM in Salt Lake City, April 20, 1990. Ladies and gentleman, via a slide presentation, I would like to present a summary of the ethnomathematical research that I conducted in the country of Bhutan from 1986 - 1988. At its grassroots level, this ethnomathematics research dealt with the teaching of elementary mathematics through the games, songs and play activities of Bhutanese children. At its theoretical level, I conclude that this form of pedagogy is an actualization of the principle of complementarity and further conclude that complementarity can be used as a theoretical foundation for the concept of ethnomathematics. This research has made an original contribution to lcnowledge by extending and applying the Principle of Complementarity to human behavior. By definition, the Principle of Complementarity states that two descriptions or sets of concepts, though mutually exclusive, are nonetheless both necessary for a complete description of the situation. The physicist and Nobel Laureate, Niels Bohr, firmly believed that the Principle of Complementarity had wide application outside the realm of physics and declared that one day complementarity would be taught in schools and become part of public education.

Ethnomathematics explore the interaction of mathematics and the cultures in which it arises. "Ethno" can refer to an indigenous society or any other group, such as a profession, religious affiliation, sport, or ethnicity. "Mathematics" can mean methods of counting, measuring, and calculating; symbolic systems; geometric and spatial applications; and ways of reasoning and inferring. Here is a mini-collection exploring web resources on the intersection of math and culture.

It is a project of the not-for-profit Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) in Honolulu, so it emphasizes the practice of math in Pacific Island cultures: for example, resources on “chants and chanting” discuss counting songs among Hawaiian and Chuukese (Micronesian) peoples, as well as a link on African counting songs. Resources are targeted at the elementary grades through college.

Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematics that considers the culture in which those mathematics arise, one could say the cultural study of mathematics. This study contributes both to the understanding of these cultures, but, reciprocally, to the understanding of mathematics. Subjects which are studied in ethnomathematics include but are not limited to:

The International Study Group on Ethnomathematics was founded in 1985 by math educators Gloria Gilmer, Ubiratan D'Ambrosio, Gil Cuevas, and Rick Scott. Since that time it has sponsored programs and business meetings at the annual conferences of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (U.S.A.) and at the International Congress of Mathematics Education. In 1990 ISGEm became an affiliate of the U.S. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
What is ethnomathematics?
The term was coined by Ubiratan D'Ambrosio to describe the mathematical practices of identifiable cultural groups. It is sometimes used specifically for small-scale indigenous societies, but in its broadest sense the "ethno" prefix can refer to any group national societies, labor communities, religious traditions, professional classes, and so on. Mathematical practices include symbolic systems, spatial designs, practical construction techniques, calculation methods, measurement in time and space, specific ways of reasoning and inferring, and other cognitive and material activities which can be translated to formal mathematical representation. The ISGEm strives to increase our understanding of the cultural diversity of mathematical practices, and to apply this knowledge to education and development.

As an assistant professor of mathematics at the , Furuto helps math-averse students see those kinds of relations and applications with the same enthusiasm. Her successful efforts in using and sharing a concept called ethnomathematics earned her a place as one of the Forty under 40 honorees recognized by Pacific Business News in 2010.

The ICEMs are quadrennial conferences of the International Study Group on Ethnomathematics (ISGEm). They provide an opportunity for those interested in ethnomathematics to gather to exchange ideas formally in papers, less formally in demonstrations and field trips, and socially in conference events. The first ICEM was held in 1998 in Granada, Spain, followed in 2002 by ICEM-2 (II-CIEM) in Ouro Preto, Brazil. Auckland, New Zealand hosted ICEM-3 in February 2006. Most recently, Towson, Maryland, USA, was the site of the Fourth International Conference on Ethnomathematics (ICEM-4) in 2010. Thus, the four conferences were located on four continents!
Planning for ICEM-5 will begin soonit is expected to be on a fifth continentAfricain Mozambique in 2014 . If you have suggestions, comments, or questions, you can contact
