Title: New Developments in the Casimir Effect
Authors: M. Bordag U. Mohideen V.M. Mostepanenko (Submitted on 8 Jun 2001) Abstract: We provide a review of both new experimental and theoretical developments in the Casimir effect. The Casimir effect results from the alteration by the boundaries of the zero-point electromagnetic energy. Unique to the Casimir force is its strong dependence on shape, switching from attractive to repulsive as function of the size, geometry and topology of the boundary. Thus the Casimir force is a direct manifestation of the boundary dependence of quantum vacuum.
We discuss in depth the general structure of the infinities in the field theory which are removed by a combination of zeta-functional regularization and heat kernel expansion. Different representations for the regularized vacuum energy are given. The Casimir energies and forces in a number of configurations of interest to applications are calculated. We stress the development of the Casimir force for real media including effects of nonzero temperature, finite conductivity of the boundary metal and surface roughness. Also the combined effect of these important factors is investigated in detail on the basis of condensed matter physics and quantum field theory at nonzero temperature.

    The Superstring Mystery
    Theory of Everything?
In 1982 Michael Green and John Schwarz made a discovery which might turn out be the greatest scientific advance of all time, if it is right. What they found was that a particular quantum field theory of supersymmetric strings in 10 dimensions gives finite answers at all orders in perturbation theory. This was a breakthrough because the superstring theory had the potential to include all the particles and forces in nature. It could be a completely unified theory of physics. By 1985 the press had got hold of it. Articles appeared in Science and New Scientist. They called strings a Theory Of Everything The term Theory of Everything is a desperately misleading one. Physicists usually try to avoid it but the media can't help themselves. If physicists find a complete unified set of equations for the laws of physics, then that would be a fantastic discovery. The implications would be enormous, but to call it a theory of everything would be nonsense.

Title: Spin Foam Models for Quantum Gravity
Authors: Alejandro Perez (Submitted on 27 Jan 2003 ( ), last revised 14 Feb 2003 (this version, v2)) Abstract: In this article we review the present status of the spin foam formulation of non-perturbative (background independent) quantum gravity. The article is divided in two parts. In the first part we present a general introduction to the main ideas emphasizing their motivations from various perspectives. Riemannian 3-dimensional gravity is used as a simple example to illustrate conceptual issues and the main goals of the approach. The main features of the various existing models for 4-dimensional gravity are also presented here. We conclude with a discussion of important questions to be addressed in four dimensions (gauge invariance, discretization independence, etc.).
In the second part we concentrate on the definition of the Barrett-Crane model. We present the main results obtained in this framework from a critical perspective. Finally we review the combinatorial formulation of spin foam models based on the dual group field theory technology. We present the Barrett-Crane model in this framework and review the finiteness results obtained for both its Riemannian as well as its Lorentzian variants.

Quantum Gravity - revealed by gamma ray bursts?
Gamma ray bursts - those terrific and mysterious flashes of high-energy light now considered to be probes to the farthest reaches of the Universe and earliest moments of time - may have yet another secret to reveal: quantum gravity. Not yet observed in nature, quantum gravity is the long-sought missing link between Einstein's General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, the two incongruous pillars of modern physics. NASA's Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), planned for a 2005 launch, may be able to detect for the first time the effects of quantum gravity in the speed of gamma-ray burst photons, according to two NASA scientists. The gist of this is that the gamma-ray bursts that GLAST detects will be powerful enough and distant enough to see the highest of the high-energy photons traveling slightly more slowly than lower-energy photons, weighed down by the effect of quantum gravity. Drs. Jay Norris and Jerry Bonnell of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center did the math. The two observational astronomers said that only time will tell if GLAST will see this lag time, for the quantum gravity theory (and the numbers that go along with it) are still rather speculative.

Crystal Field Theory (CFT), An Introduction.
Lecture 3. CHEM1902 (C 10K) Coordination Chemistry In the ionic CFT, it is assumed that the ions are simple point charges . When applied to alkali metal ions containing a symmetric sphere of charge, calculations of energies are generally quite successful. The approach taken uses classical potential energy equations that take into account the attractive and repulsive interactions between charged particles (that is, Coulomb's Law interactions). Electrostatic Potential is proportional to q * q /r where q and q are the charges of the interacting ions and r is the distance separating them. This leads to the correct prediction that large cations of low charge, such as K and Na , should form few coordination compounds. For transition metal cations that contain varying numbers of d electrons in orbitals that are NOT spherically symmetric, however, the situation is quite different. The shape and occupation of these d-orbitals then becomes important in an accurate description of the bond energy and properties of the transition metal compound. To be able to understand and use CFT then, it is essential to have a clear picture of the shapes (angular dependence functions) of the d-orbitals.

A conception of field was utilized implicitly by Niels Henrik Abel and Evariste Galois in their work on the solubility of equations. Within 1871, Richard Dedekind, called the placed of real or even imaginary which is closed under the little joe arithmetic operations a "field". Within 1881, Leopold Kronecker defined what he called the "domain of rationality", which is indeed the field of multinomial around modern terms. Within 1893, Heinrich Weber gave a number 1 clear definition of an abstract field. Elementary introduction
A conception of fields was 1st utilized to prove that no general formula for the roots of really multinomial of degree higher than Tetrad. Finite fields are utilized inside coding theory. Once more algebraical extension is an significant thing. Some useful theorems
