Wiki: Fourier analysis In mathematics, Fourier analysis is a subject area which grew from the study of Fourier series . The subject began with the study of the way general functions may be represented by sums of simpler trigonometric functions . Fourier analysis is named after Joseph Fourier , who showed that representing a function by a trigonometric series greatly simplifies the study of heat propagation. Today, the subject of Fourier analysis encompasses a vast spectrum of mathematics. In the sciences and engineering, the process of decomposing a function into simpler pieces is often called Fourier analysis, while the operation of rebuilding the function from these pieces is known as Fourier synthesis . In mathematics, the term Fourier analysis often refers to the study of both operations. The decomposition process itself is called a Fourier transform . The transform is often given a more specific name which depends upon the domain and other properties of the function being transformed. Moreover, the original concept of Fourier analysis has been extended over time to apply to more and more abstract and general situations, and the general field is often known as harmonic analysis . Each transform used for analysis (see list of Fourier-related transforms ) has a corresponding inverse transform that can be used for synthesis.

2D Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Java Applet This page is a tutorial for the 2D Fast Fourier Transform Applet: (I suggest openning it in a new window by right-clicking or control-clicking so you can read this tutorial.) http://www.brainflux.org/java/classes/FFT2DApplet.html Basic Information Both the data and the Fourier transform can be complex. The magnitude is represented by brightness and color by phase as shown in the complex plane to the left and in the applet's color picker. Pure positive real is bluish-cyan and negative imaginary is red. The display setting tools under the images (shown highlited to the left) don't modify the data, just how it is displayed. If you wanted to display only the real part of the image, click on the appropriate button under it. Because Fourier transforms often have data spanning by many orders of magnitude, the Brightness slider lets you smoothly change the brightness over orders of magnitude in a "tangent function" way. Fourier Transform of Gaussian is Gaussian When the Applet first comes up, it displays a 2D Gaussian in the data panel and it's Fourier transform in the other. You can get back to this by pressing the Gaussuan button on the bottom.

edit Fourier Analysis
All readers should be aware of the Fourier series and the Fourier transform from previous readings in Signals and Systems and Engineering Analysis . What Fourier analysis allows us to do is to view a signal in terms of it's frequency components, instead of it's time-based or " temporal " features. We also know that the frequency and temporal representations are equivalent. That is, they are both accurate representations of the signal that contain the same information. We can transform from one domain to the other without any loss of information.
edit Filters
A filter is a system that can perform a variety of tasks on a signal. Among these tasks are the removal of unwanted frequency components, the prediction of future values, the estimation of other filters, and the modification of a signal to have more desirable properties. We will discuss all these types of filters and more throughout this book.

Physical Meaning of 2DFT
Consider the Fourier transform of continuous, aperiodic signal (the result is easily generalized to other cases):
The inverse transform represents the spatial function as a linear combination of complex exponentials with complex weights
• The Complex weight can be represented in polar form as
in terms of its amplitude and phase
The Complex exponential can be represented as
where and
• is the unit vector along the direction of in the 2D spatial frequency domain; is the vector along the direction of in the 2D spatial domain.
The inner product represents the projection of a spatial point onto the direction of . As the value of the complex exponential is the same for all points having the same projection , the complex exponential represents a planar sinusoid in the x-y plane along the direction (i.e. ) with frequency In the function on top, (2 cycles per unit distance in x) and and (3 cycles per unit distance in y), while in the function at bottom
