These unapproved articles are subject to edit intro Game theory is the mathematical study of strategy and decision-making. Most discussions in game theory focus on games of strategy that assume rational actors : that is, that the participants take the course that offers them the best outcome reasonably available under the circumstances. Although game theory is a field of mathematics , it is often applied to the subject matter of other disciplines, most notably economics , but also many others including political science computer science , and evolutionary biology . It provides models for behavior in diverse situations by modeling interactions among participants and evaluating the possible outcomes of those interactions and what utility each participant receives.

History of game theory
The development of game theory as a distinct field within mathematics is attributed to John von Neumann , a Hungarian-born mathematician who began publishing papers on the theory of games in 1928. In 1944, he and

Jump to: navigation search Game Theory is often used to discuss the nature of human cooperation. See our entries on the Prisoner's Dilemman and the Assurance Game From the Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory "Game theory is a branch of applied mathematics that studies strategic situations where players choose different actions in an attempt to maximize their returns. First developed as a tool for understanding economic behavior and then by the RAND Corporation to define nuclear strategies, game theory is now used in many diverse academic fields, ranging from biology and psychology to sociology and philosophy. Beginning in the 1970s, game theory has been applied to animal behavior, including species' development by natural selection. Because of interesting games like the prisoner's dilemma, in which rational self-interest hurts everyone, game theory has been used in political science, ethics and philosophy. Finally, game theory has recently drawn attention from computer scientists because of its use in artificial intelligence and cybernetics." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory

From Wikiversity Jump to: navigation search Search for Game Theory on Wikipedia Game Theory is the science of studying agent behavior in a multi-agent environment. Game Theorists, either: - recommend a setup of incentives to guide the behavior to a desirable outcome, - or study a setup of incentives to predict the outcome. Agents decide their conduct mindful of their objectives. The most common objective is utility maximization. Agents might decide simultaneously, which gives rise to "strategic games" or one after another, in a specific order, which gives rise to "extended games". At decision time, agents might be certain or uncertain about the environment, as well as the incentives guiding other agents. Under the condition of perfect certainty, the game would be called a game of "perfect information," and a game of "imperfect information" otherwise. The application of these objects gave way for the use of game theory in many other fields, such as biology, economics, sociology, psychology, national defence etc.

Game theory can be distinguished in the following ways
  • Cooperative and non-cooperative game theory: The former asks the question, how given ressources ought to be allocated among players. The latter models interaction among players, which are respectively characterized as strategies . Traditionally both applications attempt to find equilibria in these games. Descriptive and normative analysis of game theory: The former predicts (or describes) real, empirically observable decision behavior. The latter is independent from empiricism and feigns (or prescribes) models with respect to optimality criteria. Games in normal form and in extensive form : If players asses their strategies simultaneously, then the outcomes are often represented by a matrix as the following:

The El Farol Bar Problem
The El Farol Bar Problem, and it's close generalization, the Minority Game, are recent, but well-studied coordination games in game theory (there's even a book ). I was going to write a descriptive post about it, but Ken, a math professor (Update: holder of two patents) and trader with a new blog has already covered the Minority Game in detail , and better yet, it's analogies to his trading experiences. This leaves me free to cover it with respect to one of my recurring pet topics, randomness and the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH).

Wiki: Game theory This article is about the branch of applied mathematics . For the discipline of studying games, see Game studies . For other uses of "Game theory", see Game theory (disambiguation) Game theory is a branch of applied mathematics that is used in the social sciences , most notably in economics , as well as in biology (particularly evolutionary biology and ecology engineering political science international relations ... computer science , and philosophy . Game theory attempts to mathematically capture behavior in strategic situations, or games zero sum games ), it has been expanded to treat a wide class of interactions, which are classified according to several criteria . Today, "game theory is a sort of umbrella or 'unified field' theory for the rational side of social science, where 'social' is interpreted broadly, to include human as well as non-human players (computers, animals, plants)" ( Aumann 1987 Traditional applications of game theory attempt to find equilibria in these games. In an equilibrium, each player of the game has adopted a strategy that they are unlikely to change. Many equilibrium concepts have been developed (most famously the Nash equilibrium ) in an attempt to capture this idea. These equilibrium concepts are motivated differently depending on the field of application, although they often overlap or coincide. This methodology is not without criticism, and debates continue over the appropriateness of particular equilibrium concepts, the appropriateness of equilibria altogether, and the usefulness of mathematical models more generally.
