Simple mathematical models can provide insight into complex societal relationships, by showing that mutual cooperation can benefit even mutually distrustful participants.
Game theory is a tool that can help explain and address social problems. Since games often reflect or share characteristics with real situations especially competitive or cooperative situations they can suggest strategies for dealing with such circumstances. Just as we may be able to understand the strategy of players in a particular game, we may also be able to predict how people, political factions, or states will behave in a given situation. Just as people generally try to win games, people also try to "win" or achieve their interests or goals in competitive situations. However, both in games and in the real world, we generally follow a set of rules to do this. Some games, like some real situations are " winner-take-all ." These games are by their nature very competitive, as only one person can win. (Chess would be an example of such a game.) Other games, however, require

Many up-to-date links, and a short introduction.

Combinatorial Game Theory
Combinatorial Game Theory studies strategies and mathematics of two-player games of perfect knowledge such as chess or go (but often either concentrating instead on simpler games such as nim, or solving endgames and other special cases). An important distinction between this subject and classical game theory (a branch of economics) is that game players are assumed to move in sequence rather than simultanously, so there is no point in randomization or other information-hiding strategies. The bible of combinatorial game theory is Winning Ways for your Mathematical Plays , by E. R. Berlekamp , J. H. Conway, and R. K. Guy; the mathematical foundations of the field are provided by Conway's earlier book On Numbers and Games . Many papers from the more recent collections Games of No Chance and More Games of No Chance are now also available online. If you haven't read these, get thee to a library!

Game Theory Game theory is a branch of mathematics that deals with the analysis of games (i.e., situations involving parties with conflicting interests). In addition to the mathematical elegance and complete "solution" which is possible for simple games, the principles of game theory also find applications to complicated games such as cards, checkers, and chess, as well as real-world problems as diverse as economics, property division, politics, and warfare. Game theory has two distinct branches: combinatorial game theory and classical game theory. Combinatorial game theory covers two-player games of perfect knowledge such as go chess , or checkers . Notably, combinatorial games have no chance element, and players take turns. In classical game theory, players move, bet, or strategize simultaneously. Both hidden information and chance elements are frequent features in this branch of game theory, which is also a branch of economics. The Season 1 episode "

William S. Vickrey was born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1914. His elementary and secondary education were in Europe and the United States, with graduation from Phillips Andover Academy in 1931. He received a B.S. in mathematics from Yale in 1935, followed by graduate work in economics at Columbia University from 1935 to 1937, when he received the M.A. degree. He then worked for the National Resources Planning Board in Washington and the Division of Tax Research in the U.S. Treasury Department.
A conscientious objector during World War II, he spent part of his alternate service designing a new inheritance tax for Puerto Rico. Columbia University awarded him the Ph.D. in economics in 1948. His doctoral dissertation

    Autobiography
To my relief, I passed the "control", the examination at age eleven to decide who could go on to the high school, the Douglas Ewart. In these days there were prizes every year. With much parental encouragement, I tried to win them, and as far as I remember was rather successful. But I must have had some sense that this drive to win is somewhat ignoble. When a friend beat me in chemistry I recollect being scolded at home for accepting defeat with equanimity. By the age of fourteen I had acquired a strange enthusiasm for mathematics, having managed to acquire a book called Teach Yourself Calculus

The direction of evolution and the future of humanity
Previous Chapter Contents Next Chapter The most recent and refined version of the evolutionary worldview that was first presented in Evolution’s Arrow can be found in the 34 page document The Evolutionary Manifesto which is here Chapter 5. Organising Cooperation But cooperation does not evolve easily. Self-interest stands in the way. Wherever cooperation has evolved, this impediment has had to be overcome. If we are to demonstrate that evolution can progress by organising cooperation over wider and wider scales, it is not enough to show only that wider-scale cooperation delivers evolutionary advantages. We must also show that evolution is capable of organising cooperation to exploit the advantages. How has evolution got around the barrier to the evolution of cooperation? How has it built cooperative organisations out of self-interested components? And can evolution continue to progress in this way in the future, building cooperative organisations of even larger scale? Until recently, when evolutionists have attempted to answer these questions, they have focused on the obvious and simple instances of cooperation that we see around us. They have concentrated on the limited cooperation we see amongst multicellular animals such as mammals, birds and insects. It is only in the last decade or so that much work has been done on the evolution of the more complex cooperation found within cells, within multicellular organisms, and within human society

    GAME THEORY
Game theory is a branch of mathematical analysis developed to study decision making in conflict situations. Such a situation exists when two or more decision makers who have different objectives act on the same system or share the same resources. There are two person and multiperson game s. Game theory provides a mathematical process for selecting an OPTIMUM STRATEGY (that is, an optimum decision or a sequence of decisions) in the face of an opponent who has a strategy of his own. In game theory one usually makes the following assumptions: (1) Each decision maker ["PLAYER"] has available to him two or more well-specified choices or sequences of choices (called "PLAYS"). (2) Every possible combination of plays available to the players leads to a well-defined end-state (win, loss, or draw) that terminates the game. (3) A specified payoff for each player is associated with each end-state (a [ZERO-SUM game] means that the sum of payoffs to all players is zero in each end-state). (4) Each decision maker has perfect knowledge of the game and of his opposition; that is, he knows in full detail the rules of the game as well as the payoffs of all other players.
