24. Fairisle: A General Topology ATM LAN
A research project investigating the architecture and management algorithms for a general topology.
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/srg/fairpap.html
Fairisle: A General Topology ATM LAN
Ian Leslie and Derek McAuley December 1990
An experimental general topology local area network based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is described. This network is intended to be used to support multiservice traffic. The provision of guarantees of quality of service to various traffic types is an important feature of the network. The management algorithms which will be used to provide these guarantees are the subject of current research; the network components described here can be viewed as a platform on which these algorithms will be developed. Fairisle is supported by the SERC under Grant GR/F 6090.8 and by HP Laboratories Bristol.
Introduction
Fairisle is a research project investigating the architecture and management algorithms for a general topology ATM network which is to be used as a private or local area network. Fairisle was begun in October 1989. It arose from work in the Computer Laboratory in ATM networks, multimedia communications, protocol architectures and fast packet switching. The overall purpose of Fairisle is to investigate networks rather than switches. Such an investigation is as much concerned with how components fit together as it is with network components themselves.

It gives all the basics of the subject, starting from definitions. Important classes of topological spaces are studied, uniform structures are introduced and applied to topological groups. Real numbers are constructed and their properties established. Part II, comprising the later chapters, Ch. 5-10, is also available in English in softcover.

Topological ideas are present in almost all areas of today's mathematics. The subject of topology itself consists of several different branches, such as point set topology, algebraic topology and differential topology, which have relatively little in common. We shall trace the rise of topological concepts in a number of different situations. Perhaps the first work which deserves to be considered as the beginnings of topology is due to Euler . In 1736 Euler published a paper on the solution of the entitled Solutio problematis ad geometriam situs pertinentis which translates into English as The solution of a problem relating to the geometry of position. The title itself indicates that Euler was aware that he was dealing with a different type of geometry where distance was not relevant.
Here is
The paper not only shows that the problem of crossing the seven bridges in a single journey is impossible, but generalises the problem to show that, in today's notation, A graph has a path traversing each edge exactly once if exactly two vertices have odd degree.

Aims and Scope Instruction to Authors Preparation of Manuscripts TAIA Home ... Topology and its Applications is a research journal devoted to many areas of topology, and is published by Elsevier Science B.V. in Amsterdam. The journal, which began in 1971, has published over one hundred volumes. The Editors-in-chief of the journal are Professor Jan van Mill (Amsterdam) and Professor Jerry E. Vaughan (Greensboro). They and four managing editors will handle submissions. The journal will publish 27 issues in 2004; an issue contains about 110 pages. Aims and Scope of the Journal The journal is primarily concerned with publishing original research papers. However, a limited number of carefully selected survey or expository papers will also be included. The mathematical focus of the journal will be that suggested by the title, research in topology. It is felt that it is inadvisable to attempt a definitive description of topology as understood for this journal. Certainly the subject includes the algebraic, general, geometric, and set-theoretic facets of topology as well as areas of interaction between topology and other mathematical disciplines, e.g., topological algebra, topological dynamics, functional analysis, category theory, etc. Since the roles of various aspects of topology continue to change, the non-specific delineation of topics serves to reflect the current state of research in topology. The journal occasionally publishes "Special Issues." Typically these are centered around a particular topic, research related to the works of an individual, or papers presented at a focused research conference. There is a list of

Algebraic topology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For the topology of pointwise convergence, see Algebraic topology (object) Algebraic topology is a branch of mathematics which uses tools from abstract algebra to study topological spaces . The basic goal is to find algebraic invariants that classify topological spaces up to homeomorphism , though usually most classify up to homotopy equivalence Although algebraic topology primarily uses algebra to study topological problems, using topology to solve algebraic problems is sometimes also possible. Algebraic topology, for example, allows for a convenient proof that any subgroup of a free group is again a free group.

edit The method of algebraic invariants
An older name for the subject was combinatorial topology , implying an emphasis on how a space X was constructed from simpler ones (the modern standard tool for such construction is the CW-complex ). The basic method now applied in algebraic topology is to investigate spaces via algebraic invariants by mapping them, for example, to
