Teacher package: Group theory
Issue 48 Submitted by plusadmin on August 31, 2008 in September 2008
The Plus teacher packages are designed to give teachers (and students) easy access to Plus content on a particular subject area. Most Plus articles go far beyond the explicit maths taught at school, while still being accessible to someone doing A level maths. They put classroom maths in context by explaining the bigger picture — they explore applications in the real world, find maths in unusual places, and delve into mathematical history and philosophy. We therefore hope that our teacher packages provide an ideal resource for students working on projects and teachers wanting to offer their students a deeper insight into the world of maths.
Group theory
This teacher package brings together all Plus articles on group theory. In addition to the Plus articles, the try it yourself section provides links to related problems on our sister site NRICH We've grouped the articles into three categories:
  • Getting to know groups — The articles in this category serve as thorough introductions to group theory and contain explicit definitions and examples of groups;

The following standalone software can be downloaded:
  • - Version 2 of a recent package for Knuth-Bendix in monoids, and automatic groups.
This is now also avaialable as a package.
  • (written with S Rees) - a package for isomorphism testing between finitely presented groups, and for plotting parts of the finite quotient lattice (using X-windows) of a finitely presented group.
  • Other Software
  • Cohomology My cohomology package, for calculating Schur multipliers and covering groups of finite groups, and first and second cohomology groups of finite groups on finite modules, is available as a standalone on request.
However, it is now accessible from both of the systems

    Introduction
This document provides a step-by-step introduction to the use of Version 2.1 of coxeter and weyl , a pair of Maple packages for working with root systems, finite Coxeter groups and Weyl characters. The latest versions of these packages, along with documentation and answers to FAQs, can be downloaded from their official home page Mathematical Prerequisites The reader should have a basic knowledge of the subject matter, including root systems (both crystallographic and non-crystallographic), reflection groups, and so on. Standard references include
    • N. Bourbaki,
    • J. Humphreys, Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory
    • J. Humphreys, Reflection Groups and Coxeter Groups
Computing Prerequisites The reader should also have a basic familiarity with the use of Maple. For example, the reader should be acquainted with the essential syntax, how to enter commands, and how to manipulate polynomials, lists, and sets. Some of this can be learned while working through the tutorial. We will not expect the reader to be able to write procedures in Maple (nor will we explain how it is done), but the reader should realize that procedure-writing is essential for harnessing the full power of this or any other Maple package.

    THE MOD-2 COHOMOLOGY OF 2-GROUPS
On this web page we present the data from the first run of the computer calculation of the mod-2 cohomology of groups of order 8, 16, 32 and 64. to see the results of the second run click here. . All of the calculations were run using the MAGMA computer algebra system. The groups are indexed by their Hall-Senior Numbers.
    State of the Calculation
The first run was terminated in July of 1997. The cohomology rings of all but 5 of the 267 groups of order 64 were calculated and are posted.

    Notes and Definitions
The following document presents a brief explaination of some of the terms and concepts that appear in the output of the calculations of the mod-p cohomology rings. The reader who is interested in more detail is invited to consult the papers [CGS] and [Test]. Other references to specific items are given below. The links in the references are to Dave Benson's electronic archives from which most of the papers can be ftp'd.

Parallel GAP/MPI (ParGAP/MPI), a share package for GAP
This package works only under UNIX. (Cygwin is an option on Windows, but you will have to port it, then.) The most recent version of this package can always be found in the ParGAP ftp directory . You can also find ParGAP/MPI at its web page for GAP share package, ParGAP. A good introduction to ParGAP is available as a preprint in either gzipped postscript format or in dvi format . There is also a ParGAP manual (.ps) or .pdf . It has been tested on Linux (ELF, Pentium), Solaris 2.6 (sparc) and OSF 1 (alpha), and IRIX 6.5 (SGI). To unpack: # Replace gap4r3 by the directory where you store GAP.
    cd .../gap4r3/pkg/
    gunzip pargap.tar.gz
tar xvf pargap.tar It can be installed as described for a generic GAP share package: cd .../pkg/pargap

These require that the group be closed under the operation (the combination of any two elements produces another element of the group), that it obey the associative law , that it contain an identity element (which, combined with any other element, leaves the latter unchanged), and that each element have an inverse (which combines with an element to produce the identity element).
