Raleigh, NC Objective to expose graduate students in mathematics, engineering, and statistics to challenging and exciting real-world problems arising in industrial and government laboratory research. Students get experience in the team approach to problem solving. Setup The students are divided into six-member teams to collaborate on industrial projects presented by experienced scientists and engineers. The corresponding problems are not the kind of academic exercises often considered in classrooms. The challenges they raise typically require fresh new insight for both formulation and solution. During the workshop, each group is mentored by both the problem presenter and a faculty adviser. Projects

12 Hours Total (Four 3-Hour Sessions)
    Introduction
It is essential that most employees in the production process understand basic mathematical concepts. For individuals planning to attend a statistical process control training session, it is a necessity. Furthermore, knowledge of metric units is needed by many such employees.
    Objectives
The participant will learn: (1) the decimal number system, (2) addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimal and fractional numbers, (3) correct rounding procedure, (4) percentages, (5) relative size, (6) concepts of squares and square roots, (7) proper key-stroke entry for calculator computational skills, (8) the names, symbols and prefixes of metric units, (9) comparisons and conversions between metric and U.S. customary units, and (10) illustrations and applications to business and industry.
    Content Outline
    • Numbers and numeration Operations with decimals and fractions Rounding procedures Calculator computations Percentages Metric units of length, volume, weight, and temperature

    Math Placement Testing
MCC uses the Compass Math Placement test to place our students into the appropriate math course. If you are planning to take the math placement test at MCC, we have several recommendations for your studying:
    • You should study for the math placement test. Like anything else, if you don't use it, you lose it. Especially if you've been out of math for a year (or even a few months over the summer), you should sit down for at least two hours and study. Often students who do not study are disappointed about their low placement. Placing into a higher-level of math class can save you time and tuition money ... it is worth a couple hours of practice. Bring a calculator that is on the approved list of calculators and that you feel comfortable using. You should not rely on the testing center to provide you with a calculator as an unfamiliar calculator can mean big trouble on the placement test. Follow this link to

Math lessons for Budiansky: Industrial concentration vs. local choice
By Elanor @ 10:11 pm on 22 August 2010. On Friday, New York Times op-ed contributor Steven Budiansky challenged local food advocates to rethink their math , mainly about food miles. As it happens, I was already doing some food calculations that day but not of the sort Budiansky discussed. My numbers included the following: As of Friday, 450 million eggs originating from two Iowa egg operations both of which buy feed and chicks from the same company had been recalled from stores in 14 states for salmonella contamination. These days, record-breaking food recalls are happening with disturbing frequency. We won't soon forget the 2009 peanut recall that affected nearly 4,000 products

Posted On: Mon, 2006-05-01 20:08 by dmueller@ioes.org An Invitation to participate in the 2007-2008 Project Applications are now being taken for the program starting April 2007 -August 2008.Illinois Teachers of grades 7-12, Science, Mathematics, and/or Industrial Technology are being invited to apply for a unique professional development opportunity. This opportunity is being offered in response to the State of Illinois identifying Industrial Technology as having a severe shortage of skilled workers entering the field. Funds are provided through the Illinois Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant (NCLB, Title II, Part B) to support a summer 2007 institute and follow up activities to assist teachers in gaining a deeper understanding of mathematics and science as these subjects relates to the "real world". The project is partnering with cutting edge businesses to bring teachers into direct contact with the daily operations and decision making in the Industrial Technology industry. As a result of this unique opportunity, Science, Mathematics, and Industrial Technology teachers of grades 7-12 will be able to create hands-on "real world" learning opportunities for their students, while increasing both student and teacher knowledge.
