    Introduction to Green's Functions
The basic idea of a Green's function is very familiar to students of mathematical physics. However, most engineers are not typically exposed to the concept of a Green's function until possibly at the upper-graduate level. Green's functions play an important role in the solution of linear ordinary and partial differential equations, and are a key component to the development of boundary integral equation methods. Here we present:
    Green's Functions: Basic Concepts
Consider a linear differential equation written in the general form where L(x) is a linear, self-adjoint differential operator, u(x) is the unknown function, and f(x) is a known non-homogeneous term. For a discussion of the concept of self-adjoint and non self-adjoint differential operators please refer, for example, to the text by Morse and Feshbach . Operationally, we can write a solution to equation (1) as

  • Integral Equations - Dave Rusin; The Mathematical Atlas
A short article designed to provide an introduction to integral equations, which seek functions that satisfy relationships with their integrals. For example, the value of a function at each time may be related to its average value over all preceding time. Included in this area are equations mixing integration and differentiation. Many of the themes from differential equations recur: qualitative questions, methods of approximation, specific types of equations of interest, transforms and operators useful for simplifying the problems. History; applications and related fields and subfields; textbooks, reference works, and tutorials; software and tables; other web sites with this focus. more>>

My spreadsheet template, TankVolume , calculates the liquid volume of partially filled tanks, horizontal or vertical, with various types of heads. One of these, the torispherical head, requires that integral equations be solved. This article shows how the integrals are evaluated.
Torispherical heads are made up of two parts. The rounded end has a spherical shape. It has a Unless f=0.5, there would be an abrupt angle between the shell and head unless a transition piece is installed. This is the second part of the torispherical head, a transition piece shaped like a donut or torus. When calculating the volume of fluid in a torispherical head, the head is divided into three parts. The first is the lower portion occupied by the knuckle (liquid height to h1 as seen in the diagram). The second part is the portion covered by the spherical dish section, which also includes the knuckle at the perimeter.

Differential and Integral equations are popular as models in Biology and Medicine. Examples include applications in Cell Biology: cell population, cell motility and molecular motor models; applications in Epidemiology: early childhood diseases models (measles, rubella, etc.)
Applications in Medicine include diabetes models, cancer, tuberculosis and influenza models, blood production and flow models. Also models associated with functions of various parts of the human body like the heart, kidneys, the pancreas, the eyes, the gastro-intestinal system, to mention a few.
The objective of the DIEBM2010 Workshop is to bring together established scientists and postgraduate students working on aspects of Mathematical Biology, Numerical Analysis and Computing, Biology and Medicine where Differential and Integral equations apply and to report on current research and future developments; the aim and hope is that the meeting will allow easier communication of cross-disciplinary ideas and will result in acceleration of new collaborations of Applied Mathematicians and Numerical and Computer Analysts with scientists in these two subjects (Biology and Medicine) which more and more rely on modelling and computing for further progress. A half day short course on Integral Equations will complement the works of the Workshop

Integral Equations Stan Richardson We show how Mathematica can be used to obtain numerical solutions of integral equations by exploiting a combination of iteration and interpolation. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated by considering three classical integral equations of applied mathematics: Love's equation for the condenser problem, Theodorsen's equation associated with conformal mapping, and Nekrasov's equation arising in the theory of water waves. The success of the approach depends on the use of an appropriate method for the interpolation. His principal research interest is in free boundary problems, particularly those arising in fluid mechanics, the approach being essentially analytic using methods based on conformal mapping and complex variable theory. JOURNAL OF INTEGRAL EQUATIONS AND APPLICATIONS
The Journal of Integral Equations and Applications endeavors to publish significant research papers and substantial expository/survey papers in theory, numerical analysis, and applications of various areas of integral equations, and to influence and shape developments in this field. The Editors aim at maintaining a balanced coverage between theory and applications, between existence theory and constructive approximation, and between topological/operator-theoretic methods and classical methods in all types of integral equations. The journal is expected to be an excellent source of current information in this area for mathematicians, numerical analysts, engineers, physicists, biologists and other users of integral equations in the applied mathematical sciences. To service in this role, the balanced coverage mentioned earlier has to be maintained. JIEA also nourishes significant contributions to classical and functional analysis, numerical analysis, and applied mathemtics, provided they have demonstrable relevance to integral equations. The Editors, in making decisions on acceptance of manuscripts, will be guided by this goal. The rating of papers by the referees and the Associate Editors will be crucial in making decisions in cases when we may not be able to publish all papers that are recommended.

TECHNIQUES FOR SOME PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS Section 3.1 Language and Classification In this beginning with second order equations, we will take a look at the language of partial differential equations. We should be sure that we all have the same vocabulary. Since there is some standard language for the identification of partial differential equations, let's agree with the language that every one else uses as a start. Several parts are easy. Suppose that we have a partial differential equation in u. The order of the equation is the order of the highest partial derivative of u, the number of variables is simply the number of independent variables for u in the equation, and the equation has constant coefficients if u and the coefficients of all the partial derivatives of u are constant. If all the terms involving u are moved to the left side of the equation, then the equation is called homogeneous if the right side is zero, and
