It is well known that the operations of differentiation and integration are reduced to multiplication and division after being transformed by an integral transform (like e.g. Fourier or Laplace Transforms). My question: Is there any intuition why this is so? It can be proved, ok - but can somebody please explain the big picture (please not too technical - I might need another intuition to understand that one then, too ;-) fourier-analysis laplace-transform intuition flag asked Oct 27 2009 at 13:32 vonjd

It might help you to think about a discrete model: consider complex valued functions on Z/n. The discrete Fourier transform takes f(k) to
Similarly, changing f(k) to f(k+1)-f(k) changes g(j) to g(j)*(zeta^j-1). So, in this discrete model, taking a difference becomes multiplication by (zeta^j-1). In a similar way, in the continuous setting, taking a derivative becomes multiplication by x. link flag edited Oct 28 2009 at 11:48

Title: Applications of integral transforms in fractional diffusion processes
Authors: Francesco Mainardi (Submitted on 30 Sep 2007) Abstract: The fundamental solution (Green function) for the Cauchy problem of the space-time fractional diffusion equation is investigated with respect to its scaling and similarity properties, starting from its Fourier-Laplace representation. Then, by using the Mellin transform, a general representation of the Green function in terms of Mellin-Barnes integrals in the complex plane is derived. This allows us to obtain a suitable computational form of the Green function in the space-time domain and to analyse its probability interpretation. Comments: 11 Pages. Paper with added notes based on an invited lecture: 3rd International ISAAC Congress, Free University of Berlin, 20-25 August 2001 (Sub-session 1.3: Integral Transforms and Applications) Subjects: Probability (math.PR)

Fourier Series and Integral Transforms (Hebrew version) By: Allan Pinkus and Samy Zafrany A PostScript Source of all the Book! This is the Hebrew version of a textbook for an upper division undergraduate and introductory graduate level course intended for a basic understanding of Fourier series, Fourier transforms, and Laplace transforms. This book was later translated into English and has been published by Cambridge University Press. Click here for information on the English translation. Fourier series (and power series) are important examples of useful series of functions. Applications of Fourier series may be found in many diverse theoretical and applied areas. The same holds for integral transforms. The Fourier and Laplace transforms are the best known of these transforms and are prototypes of the general integral transforms. This book was originally prepared, in Hebrew, for the course "Fourier Series and Integral Transformations" given by the Department of Mathematics at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. This course is intended for students of the Department of Electrical Engineering, but also includes students of the Physics and Computer Science Departments. It is a one semester course (14 weeks), given during the third semester of studies, with two hours of lectures and a one hour problem session each week. Please note that the files are in PostScript format (ps). You need a program like GhostView in order to be able to view them and print them. If you use Windows 95, click here to load
