The theme of the conference will be a survey of the state of the art in Algebraic cycles, K-Theory, and modular representation theory, in particular as influenced by the work of Eric Friedlander. The conference will feature several key-note talks which will survey the historical background, current state of development, and prospects for future progress in all of the focused areas. These talks will be particularly valuable for young researchers. Other talks will present recent developments in the three focused areas.

1. to introduce algebraic K-theory of spaces introduced by Waldhausen and
non-connected K-theory (negative K-theory) of Bass, Thomason-Trobaugh and Schlichting etc. for non-experts.
2. to report recent progress of open problems below in motive theory and algebraic K-theory:
Tate conjecture, Standard conjecture, Hodge conjecture, Beilinson conjecture, Gersten conjecture,
Weibel's K-dimensional conjecture and so on. In particular, we emphasize the logical connection among these conjectures. I'm looking for a big-picture treatment of algebraic K-theory and why it's important. I've seen various abstract definitions (Quillen's plus and Q constructions, some spectral constructions like Waldhausen's) and a lot of work devoted to calculation in special cases, e.g., extracting information about K-theory from Hochschild and cyclic homology. As far as I can tell, K-theory is extremely difficult to compute, it yields deep information about a category, and in some cases, this produces highly nontrivial results in arithmetic or manifold topology. I've been unable to piece these results into a coherent picture of why one would think K-theory is the right tool to use, or why someone would want to know that, e.g., K (Z) has an element of order 691. Explanations and pointers to readable literature would be greatly appreciated. at.algebraic-topology algebraic-k-theory motivation kt.k-theory-homology flag edited Nov 25 at 4:46 Harrison Brown

Algebraic K-theory originated in classical materials that connected class groups, unit groups and determinants, Brauer groups, and related things for rings of integers, fields, etc, and includes a lot of local-to-global principles. But that's the original motivation and not the way the work in the field is currently going - from your question it seems like you're asking about a motivation for "higher" algebraic K-theory.

The Editorial Board of 'K-Theory' has resigned.
This just in. The editorial board of `K-theory' has resigned and a new journal titled `Journal
of K-theory' has been established. In recent years `K-theory' was published by Springer. `Journal of K-theory' will be published by the Cambridge University Press. The board of editors of the new `Journal of K-theory' has issued an open letter to the mathematics community that we quote in part:
``OPEN LETTER
from the Board of Editors
of the Journal of K-theory
Dear fellow mathematicians,
The Editorial Board of 'K-Theory' has resigned. A new journal titled
'Journal of K-theory' has been formed, with essentially the same Board
of Editors............The new journal is to be distributed by Cambridge University Press.
The price is 380 British pounds, which is significantly less than
half that of the old journal. Publication will begin in January 2008. We ask for your continued support, in particular at the current time. Your submissions are welcome and may be sent to any of the editors.

So basically Salinger has spent 50+ years cashing royalty checks and contributing back very little (at least on the scale of another widely-studied novel). That makes no sense from a resource allocation perspective. Catcher was a significant societal contribution, but society has had little payback from its subsequent investment (must be tens of millions of dollars) in Mr. Salinger.
Getting paid for what I’ve already done doesn’t make sense (from the Catcher in the Rye example). So, here’s my proposed deal. Y’all can have everything I’ve already done for free-as-in-beer if I get a steady income for the work I’m about to do.
