Linear Algebra Linear algebra is the study of linear sets of equations and their transformation properties. Linear algebra allows the analysis of rotations in space, least squares fitting , solution of coupled differential equations, determination of a circle passing through three given points, as well as many other problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering. Confusingly, linear algebra is not actually an algebra in the technical sense of the word "algebra" (i.e., a vector space over a field , and so on). The matrix and determinant are extremely useful tools of linear algebra. One central problem of linear algebra is the solution of the matrix equation for . While this can, in theory, be solved using a matrix inverse other techniques such as Gaussian elimination are numerically more robust. In addition to being used to describe the study of linear sets of equations, the term "linear algebra" is also used to describe a particular type of algebra. In particular, a linear algebra over a field has the structure of a ring with all the usual axioms for an inner addition and an inner multiplication together with distributive laws, therefore giving it more structure than a ring. A linear algebra also admits an outer operation of multiplication by scalars (that are elements of the underlying field

Recitations
Recitations meet on Tuesdays. You must enroll in a specific section. Your homework and exams will go to that section. Default recitation sections are assigned by the Registrar. You may change your recitation and view your grades on Stellar Course Management System
Homework and Collaboration
Homework will be posted weekly in the Problem Sets section of the class website. Assignments will be due on Thursdays, BEFORE 4PM. Please put them in the box for your section in 2-106, next to the Undergraduate Mathematics Office. Please staple them (you may use the UMO stapler). They are due every week and are returned in recitation. There is an experimental Homework policy posted on Stellar The homeworks are essential in learning linear algebra. They are not a test and you are encouraged to talk to other students about difficult problems-after you have found them difficult. Talking about linear algebra is healthy. But you must write your own solutions.

Mostly there are two themes in this collection of short hand-outs. First, that rather than think of an m by n matrix as a doubly-indexed array, it is often more enlightening to think of it as a n-tuple of columns (which are, of course, m-vectors) or an m-tuple of rows.
And secondly, that once one understands the method of solving systems of equations by elimination, essentially one knows the whole of the linear algebra covered in this (very stripped-down) course. Everything else, except for eigenvectors and eigenvalues, is just a matter of constantly restating the same facts in different language. A lot of the files listed below are in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format. Alternate versions are in DVI format (produced by TeX; see see here for a DVI viewer provided by John P. Costella ) and postscript format (viewable with ghostscript .) Some systems may have some problem with certain of the documents in dvi format, because they use a few German letters from a font that may not be available on some systems. (Three alternate sites for DVI viewers, via FTP, are CTAN Duke , and Dante, in Germany

    Definition of a lens
Lenses A lens is a custom view of the content in the repository. You can think of it as a fancy kind of list that will let you see content through the eyes of organizations and people you trust. What is in a lens? Lens makers point to materials (modules and collections), creating a guide that includes their own comments and descriptive tags about the content. Who can create a lens? Any individual member, a community, or a respected organization. What are tags? Tags are descriptors added by lens makers to help label content, attaching a vocabulary that is meaningful in the context of the lens.

These are the lecture notes and tutorial problems for the Linear Algebra module in Mathematics for Informatics 3 (MAT-2-mi3/am3i) . They are a revised version of the ones used in the 2004-2005 session, which were themselves revised due to changes in the syllabus from the ones used in the 2003-2004 session. The original lecture notes have benefited from extant notes on linear algebra by John Meldrum and on polynomials by Andrew Ranicki Linear algebra is the study of vector spaces and linear maps. The module is divided into three parts. During the first part, which will take up about half of the semester, we will study real vector spaces and their linear maps. We will discuss subspaces, linear (in)dependence, bases, dimension, linear maps and linear transformations and their relation to matrices, the effect of changing basis, eigenvalues and eigenvectors and diagonalisation. The second part will be devoted to univariate polynomials. The third and final part will serve as an introduction to algebraic coding theory, concentrating for definiteness on binary linear codes.
