Summary: excellent graduate level text on math stat
Rating: 5 Instead of a rehash of what other reviewers say, let me tell you all the reasons why I give it five stars. First of all, any modern book on mathematical statistics should contain some coverage of the bootstrap, jackknife and other resampling and compuer-intensive methods. Shao covers these topics but also has done extensive research in some of these areas. In the first edition of my bootstrap book, I cited this text. Also I have read and cite another text by Shao and Tu which gives an excellent treatment of the bootstrap and the jackknife along with several simulation studies that help the researcher understand the advantages and disadvantages of each of these methods in various contexts. The statistical profession is flourishing the most in the area of biostatistics and pharmaceuticals. Shao has been a big contributor in these subspecialties. He has done some original work on the application of the bootstrap to the estimation of individual bioequivalence and also has developed the theory to back up the applications (consistency of bootstrap estimates).

Mathematical Statistics
Description of research
In Sweden mathematical statistics means the union of probability theory and statistics. The Uppsala profile is fairly broad, although mainly focussed on probability and stochastic processes. Saeid Amiri is a PhD student in the field of computer-intensive statistics. He got his licentiate in SLU. He is working on the bootstrap method, especially on the inference of variance, coefficient of variation and the goodness-of-fit test.
Sven Erick Alm
mainly works in discrete probability, in particular
percolation theory (which, as a typical example, describes how fluids
percolate through porous media).Another interest is scan statistics
(which describe the clumping of random events in time or space). Part
of his research is joint work with John Wierman (Johns Hopkins) and
Gregory Sorkin (IBM, Yorktown Heights).
Måns Eriksson
is a PhD student in theoretical statistics, working with goodness-of-fit tests. Allan Gut 's research interest lies mainly within probability theory. His early work dealt with renewal theory and stopped random walks, which later resulted in the 1988 research monograph
