    • Math Education Program Overview
Mathematics is a universal tool applied by scientists, businesspeople, engineers, and others around the world as they tackle the exciting challenges of the 21st century. Mathematics also helps us all with the increasing complexities of daily living-family budgets, insurance and mortgages, tax returns, and investment and retirement funds. With the challenges of the new century both at home and abroad, the demand for outstanding mathematics teachers in our schools has become critical.
    Mathematics Education, BS
In the Bachelor of Science Program in Teaching Mathematics, Grades 7-12, in the Department of Teaching and Learning, our goal is to prepare teachers who can help their students think critically about their teaching and devise ways to improve mathematics education. We focus on current developments in mathematics teaching nationwide and keep the program up-to-date by integrating into our curriculum recommendations from teaching organizations and national commissions. We address issues of ethnicity and gender in mathematics education and work with students to develop strategies to help underrepresented minorities and females surmount learning barriers.

    • Each semester, I am the organizer for the Discrete Mathematics Seminar , which is also a section of the Graduate Seminar (MAT 6939) open to graduate students for three hours credit (see me for details). Each session, speakers speak about mathematical topics ranging from the theory of computation to algebraic topology, from mathematical logic to graph theory; for a sample, see the announcement page for fall . Starting September 13, we meet every Monday from 3:05 to 3:55 in LIF263.
    • This fall, I am teaching Vector Calculus , which is basically the calculus you need for getting started in physics or engineering.
    • Next spring, there will be several courses of interest to students interested in Reticular geometry
      • For graduate students of mathematics: Mile Krajcevski will be teaching a course on Geometric Group Theory , which involves some of the algebraic foundations of reticular geometry. The prerequisite is the graduate Algebra I course.

    Introduction
These pages express my views about good web design. I was invited to prepare them by Jon Choate for the 1997 annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Minneapolis. For this reason, some of the examples are directed at mathematics educators and I include some discussion of the challenge of communicating mathematical ideas within the limits of HTML. But I hope that the design principles expressed on these pages will be useful for anyone who is preparing material for the web. The invention of the World Wide Web puts a great tool in the hands of educators. Now we can share our ideas about mathematics teaching with a virtually unlimited audience. Students can express themselves and learn from others, do research, gather data, and publish their own results. Luckily, more and more schools are getting connected to the Internet, and as a result, more and more people are learning how to create web pages using the Hypertext Markup Language, known as HTML. The good news is that a lot of material can be presented using HTML documents, and HTML documents are easy to write. They are just text files that contain some simple codes for describing the structural aspects of material and linking it to other sites on the web. You don't need a lot of fancy software to write an HTML document just an editor that saves text files. I use a Macintosh, and my favorite editor for writing HTML is

It incorporates materials from two of our earlier curriculum projects, Connected Geometry and Mathematical Methods in High School CME Project Linear Algebra and Geometry is an additional course in the CME Project series that is designed for schools that want to offer an elective to students who have finished the traditional high school program or who want an alternative to the first or second course in calculus. Funded by the NSF and currently in development, it will consist of three parts: a core semester that develops the basic algebra and geometry of vectors and matrices, a second semester that completes a traditional undergraduate typical linear algebra course, and a set of several stand-alone modules to build on the core to survey several applications of linear algebra in mathematics-related fields.

Improving math instruction for young children
Research shows a solid early introduction to the “big ideas” in mathematics can help a child succeed in school later on. Yet too many early childhood teachers neglect math. They don’t realize young children are ready, even eager, to learn core mathematical concepts. Worse, they aren’t prepared to teach these concepts. Erikson’s Early Mathematics Education Project works to change that in three ways:
    • Teacher education . We bring better math instruction to the classroom through intensive professional development for preschool and kindergarten teachers. Workshops, in-class observation and video coaching, and advanced seminars build their math knowledge and confidence in their ability to teach math in fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate ways. Research : From our work, the EME project generates new knowledge about approaches to teacher education, teacher development, and the most effective methods of mathematics instruction for young children. Dissemination : We are a source for information on teaching foundational mathematics. Our
