How do you measure integration?
One of the Swedish Presidency's final meetings was ‘Integration of new Arrivals - Incentives and Work in Focus', held in Malmö on 14-16 December 2009. At the meeting 150 experts from across Europe - and several also from the United States and Canada - discussed and identified indicators in the area of integration. In the future, these indicators will make it easier to compare and learn from other Member States. We put some questions to State Secretary Christer Hallerby from the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality, who is pleased with the outcome of the meeting.

Introduction
Measure theory and integration is the study of lengths, surface area, and volumes in general spaces. This is a critical feature of a full development of integration theory; moreover, it provides the basic framework for probability theory. Measure theory is a meeting place between the tame applicability of real functions and the wild possibilities of set theory. This is the setting of fractals.
History
Applications and related fields
For numerical integration of real functions see Numerical Analysis Treated here are measure theory both abstractly and on the real line. For measure theory and analysis on Lie groups, see 43-XX. For measure and integration on infinite-dimensional vector spaces see 46-XX and 47-XX. The Borel sets and related families are constructed as a part of "descriptive" set theory (now in section 03E).     How can we measure "integration"?
    "Integration" is a major operation in language processing (and other domains). We have to integrate bits of sounds to extract words, integrate morphemic bits to derive word meanings, integrate lexical-semantic information with syntactic information, sensory with motor information, audio with visual information, and all of this with the contextual background.
    Some theorists talk specifically about regions of the brain that perform such integrations. I've got my favorite sensory-motor integration site, Hagoort has a theory about phonological, semantic, and syntactic integration in (different portions of) Broca's area, more broadly, Damasio has been talking about "convergence zones" (aka, integration sites) for years.
    Two thoughts come to mind. One, is there any part of the brain that isn't doing integration, i.e., how useful is the concept? And two, if the concept does have some value, how do we identify integration areas?
    I don't know the answer to first question and I have some concerns about the way some in the field approach the second. W.r.t. the latter, a typical approach is to look for regions that increase in activity as a function of "integration load". The idea is that by making integration harder, we will drive integration areas more strongly and this will cause them to pop out in our brain scans. This seems logical enough. But is it true?

    I'm going to be teaching a Master's level analysis course(measure theory, Lebesgue integration, Banach and Hilbert spaces, and if there's time, some spectral or PDE stuff) in the fall. My problem is that while roughly half of the students will actually be using analysis in their further work, the rest of them are going to specialize in combinatorics, and while I want to convince them that they should know this stuff as part of their general mathematical culture, I'd also like to try to connect it to what they'll be working on. So far, I've found survey articles on applications of Ramsey theory to Banach spaces, and applications of harmonic analysis to additive number theory, but I was wondering whether anyone had some suggestions of references for applications of classical analysis to old-fashioned, classical combinatorics. (I realise that this is a pretty tall order, as on many levels, these two fields are at antipodes.) PS: I'm planning on talking about probability measures on discrete spaces, but I don't think that will convince the combinatorics people that hacking through the construction of the Lebesgue integral could have a practical payoff someday for them.
