Quantum Mechanics for Two Particles
We can know the state of two particles at the same time. The positions and momenta of particle 2 commute with the positions and momenta of particle 1.
The kinetic energy terms in the Hamiltonian are independent. There may be an interaction between the two particles in the potential. The Hamiltonian for two particles can be easily written.
Often, the potential will only depend on the difference in the positions of the two particles
This means that the overall Hamiltonian has a translational symmetry . Lets examine an infinitesimal translation in

We have proven that
if the Hamiltonian has translational symmetry. The momentum is a constant of the motion . Momentum is conserved. We can have simultaneous eigenfunctions of the total momentum and of energy

Pulleys Problems involve two weights either side of a pulley. The heavier weight pulls on the lighter causing both to accelerate in one direction with a common acceleration. calculation of acceleration 'a' calculation of tension 'T' Example A 3 kg mass and a 5 kg mass are connected over a pulley by a light inextensible string. When the masses are released from rest, what is: i) the acceleration of each mass? ii) the tension in the string (Take g=9.8 ms . Answer to 2 d.p.) i) ii) back to top Towe-bar/towe-rope/chains Usually one body pulled horizontally by another with each linked by a towe-bar or similar. This is similar to the pulley but drawn out in a line. assuming no friction, calculation of acceleration 'a' calculation of tension 'T' Example A car of mass 600 kg towes a trailer of mass 250 kg in a straight line using a rigid towe-bar. The resistive force on the car is 200N. The resistive force on the trailer is 80N.

Abstract
Conditions for Lorentz invariance are derived for Newtonian equations of motion for particles with positive mass and nonzero spin. Additional equations are obtained for two-particle forces when it is assumed that sums of two-particle forces satisfy the Lorentz-invariance conditions for three-particle systems. These imply that the two-particle forces satisfy separately the nonlinear and linear parts of the Lorentz-invariance conditions. Lorentz transformations justified by the linear parts are used to obtain the general forms of the two-particle forces, as functions of the momentum of the source particle, in terms of the forces in the rest frame of the source particle. These have to satisfy the remaining nonlinear equations. Bibtex entry for this abstract Preferred format for this abstract (see Preferences
