What's Next on the Web: a ReadWriteWeb Toolkit for 2008
By Marshall Kirkpatrick / January 2, 2008 1:30 AM / 23 Comments Tweet
Some people say that the bubble's going to take a downturn in the next year or two - that huge numbers of copycat startups are going to shut down, people are going to be out of work and Web 2.0 cheerleaders are going to eat their (our) words. While startup churn is inevitable in any industry (thank goodness we're not restaurant founders!) I think this forecast is selling the future short. There are some big trends I'm really excited about for the web in 2008. Whatever happens to the economy, there's at least a whole lot of innovation to be inspired by right now. Ultimately, I think that will end up brightening the picture for all of us around the world.
Let's Build Some Stuff
For each of the 5 big topical trends described below, I've assembled some resources I think will be useful for anyone who wants to keep up with cutting edge developments in these fields in the next year. These resources include: * An OPML file of top blogs on each subject. This is a bundle of feeds you can import into your reader.

34. Wapedia - Wiki: Tensor
Tensor calculus was developed around 1890 by Gregorio RicciCurbastro (also called just Ricci) . One approach is to define a tensor as a multilinear map.
http://wapedia.mobi/en/Tensor_calculus
Wiki: Tensor For a modern but abstract treatment, see Tensor (intrinsic definition) . For other uses, see Tensor (disambiguation) Note that in common usage, the term tensor is also used to refer to a tensor field Tensors are geometric entities introduced into mathematics and physics to extend the notion of scalars geometric vectors , and matrices to higher orders. Tensors were first conceived by Tullio Levi-Civita and Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro , who continued the earlier work of Bernhard Riemann and Elwin Bruno Christoffel and others, as part of the absolute differential calculus . The concept enabled an alternative formulation of the intrinsic differential geometry of a manifold in the form of the Riemann curvature tensor
whose columns are the forces acting on the , and faces of the cube. Many physical quantities are naturally regarded not as vectors themselves, but as correspondences between one set of vectors and another. For example, the stress tensor T takes a direction v as input and produces the stress T v on the surface normal to this vector as output and so expresses a relationship between these two vectors. Because they express a relationship between vectors, tensors themselves are independent of a particular choice of coordinate system . It is possible to represent a tensor by examining what it does to a coordinate basis or frame of reference ; the resulting quantity is then an organized multi-dimensional array of numerical values. The coordinate-independence of a tensor then takes the form of a

News MATRIX CALCULUS AND KRONECKER PRODUCT A Practical Approach to Linear and Multilinear Algebra (2nd Edition) by Willi-Hans Steeb (University of Johannesburg, South Africa) Yorick Hardy (University of Johannesburg, South Africa) This book provides a self-contained and accessible introduction to linear and multilinear algebra. Besides the standard techniques for linear and multilinear algebra many advanced topics are included. Emphasis is placed on the Kronecker product and tensor product. The Kronecker product has widespread applications in signal processing, discrete wavelets, statistical physics, computer graphics, fractals, quantum mechanics and quantum computing. All these fields are covered in detail. A key feature of the book is the many detailed worked-out examples. Computer algebra applications are also given. Each chapter includes useful exercises. The book is well suited for pure and applied mathematicians as well as theoretical physicists and engineers.
