##### Introduction to the Binary and Other Number Systems
Note to persons reading this in Braille. This section contains some mathematical notation which may not display correctly when transcribed to Braille 2. We would appreciate feedback on any problems. Place-value and the decimal system. Our decimal or base ten number system is a place-value system. This means that the place or location where you put a numeral determines its corresponding numerical value. (This is analogous to braille codes in that the place you put a cell sometimes determines its meaning.) A two in the one's place means two times one or two. A two in the one-thousand's place means two times one thousand or two thousand. Figure 1 shows the place values for the first six whole number places in the decimal system. Whole number places: Place values: 100000 10000 1000 100 10 1 Fig. 1. Place values (in decimal) for the decimal number system. The place-value of the place immediately to the left of the "decimal" point is one in all place-value number systems. (The point itself should have different names in different number systems but this distinction isn't usually made.)

##### 1. Introduction
Just as a Gregorian date is a date in the Gregorian Calendar, a Julian date is a date in the Julian Calendar. (For more on these calendars see The Julian and Gregorian Calendars ). Astronomers sometimes use the term "Julian date" in another sense, according to which it is related to what is called a "Julian day number". Such a use of the term "Julian date" makes it ambiguous, but the meaning is usually clear from the context. In this article the notion of the Julian day number will be explained, along with various meanings of the term Julian date. According to the system of numbering days called Julian day numbers , used by astronomers and calendricists (those who study calendars, unfortunately not for a living), the temporal sequence of days is mapped onto the sequence of integers, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, etc. This makes it easy to determine the number of days between two dates (just subtract one Julian day number from the other). For example, a solar eclipse was seen at Nineveh on June 15, 763 B.C. (Julian Calendar), according to the Assyrian chronicles in the British Museum, and a lunar eclipse occurred there on the night of April 14-15, 425 B.C. (Julian Calendar). (The

##### Elias' Pi Page
Why is Pi always written in the decimal number system? It would be even more beautiful if it was written in the simplest of all number systems, the binary.
through the 32768 first bits of binary Pi!
##### Listen to Pi
There is actually an infinite amount of information hidden in pi, so it must be possible to find any information in it if you just have enough time and computing power. For example, has anyone ever tried to let a computer treat the binary digits of pi as a piece of digitized sound? Maybe the voice of God is sampled into pi, or a piece of music, or just white noise. It would be disappointing to discover that pi is nothing more than just the ultimate white noise generator!

##### Look at Pi
Pi is a totally theoretical object created in our minds - as are all numbers. Nobody has ever seen Pi, but it is possible to visualize it in different ways using computers.

The mathematician Benjamin Peirce called mathematics "the science that draws necessary conclusions". Albert Einstein , on the other hand, stated that "as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality." Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning , mathematics evolved from counting calculation measurement , and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Practical mathematics has been a human activity for as far back as

57. Ancient Greek Number System
Ten is the very nature of number. All Greeks and all barbarians alike count up to ten, and having reached ten revert again to the unity.
http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Counting.htm
Greek Numbers Michael Lahanas It seems to us that after the invention of writing the largest discovery was the use by humanity of the so-called decimal notation. M. V. Ostrogradsky Arithmetica , Gregor Reisch 1503. A Symbolic Image: Boethius and Pythagoras in a mathematical Competition. Pythagoras uses an Abacus, while Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (480 AD-524 AD) uses Numerals from India. Boethius looks very proud, he is ready while the poor Pythagoras still tries to find the solution. "Ten is the very nature of number. All Greeks and all barbarians alike count up to ten, and having reached ten revert again to the unity. And again, Pythagoras maintains, the power of the number 10 lies in the number 4, the tetrad. This is the reason: if one starts at the unit (1) and adds the successive number up to 4, one will make up the number 10 (1+2+3+4 = 10). And if one exceeds the tetrad, one will exceed 10 too.... So that the number by the unit resides in the number 10, but potentially in the number 4. And so the Pythagoreans used to invoke the Tetrad as their most binding oath: `By him that gave to our generation the Tetractys, which contains the fount and root of eternal nature...'" Aetius I. 3.8)
