Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student will know how to:
  • Find the solution of linear systems of equations. Compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices. Approximate functions of one variable by polynomials and piecewise polynomials (splines). Compute good approximations to one-dimensional integrals. Increase the accuracy of numerical approximations by extrapolation. Use Matlab to achieve these goals.

Home About Octave News Archive Docs Wiki ... Help Wanted GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides a convenient command line interface for solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with Matlab. It may also be used as a batch-oriented language. For more information, see the page about Octave

Who is going to need a database engine in 2020?
Given the Big Data phenomenon, you might think that everyone is becoming a database engineer. Unfortunately, writing a database engine is hard:
    • Concurrency is difficult. Whenever a data structure is modified by different processes or threads, it can end up in an inconsistent state. Database engines cope with concurrency in different ways: e.g., through locking or multiversion concurrency control . While these techniques are well known, few programmers have had a chance to master them. Persistence is also difficult. You must somehow keep the database on a slow disk, while keeping some of the data in RAM. At all times, the content of the disk should be consistent. Moreover, you must avoid data loss as much as possible.
So, developers almost never write their own custom engines. Some might say that it is an improvement over earlier times when developers absolutely had to craft everything by hand, down to the B-trees .  The result was often expensive projects with buggy results. However, consider that even a bare-metal language like C++ is getting support for

My own experience with N-body simulation methods are with schemes using direct integration of forces ("Particle Particle" methods), and also with the symplectic methods. When a discussion in August 1995 on the sci.math.num-analysis newsgroup about N-body/Particle simulation methods caught my attention, I wrote this article to keep track of the different schemes (too many acronyms!), and to learn what researchers in the field are using today. Numerical Analysis
Numerical analysis is no longer part of Oxford University Computing Laboratory and has moved to the Mathematical Institute Numerical analysis concerns the development of algorithms for solving all kinds of problems of continuous mathematics; it is a wide-ranging discipline having close connections with computer science, mathematics, engineering, and the sciences. Oxford's Numerical Analysis Group has long been a leader in the UK; the permanent faculty Raphael Hauser, Ian Sobey, Endre Suli, Lloyd N. (Nick) Trefethen, and Andy Wathen. Nick Gould, former member of the faculty is still associated with the group as visiting professor.
