Operational research
A main objective of the Zambia operational research office is to generate information to provide timely, accurate and relevant information for policy decision making. Generating sound evidence is a priority area for the National Malaria Control Centre (NMCC) because this facilitates implementation of evidence-based health care interventions. This leads to efficiencies in planning and resource utilisation. The NMCC is implementing key strategies, which globally have been found to be effective in combating malaria. It thus becomes necessary to ensure that the progress and impact made by use of such strategies in the Zambian context is assessed and also that new ways of managing malaria are investigated. Much of the work conducted is very applied in nature, which creates a valuable and practical approach to assessing the malaria control efforts. Many of the study sites fall within the RBM sentinel sites for malaria information system. These districts are representative of the malaria epidemiology, socioeconomic characteristics and geographical diversity. Each year, priority areas for malaria research are identified and studies are conducted in line with recognised standards for credible research.

Operational Research CONsultancy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search ORCON (Operational Research CONsultancy) was developed by a UK consultancy company in 1974 as a standard for monitoring ambulance service performance. The standard was later adopted internationally by a number of different countries including the Australian ambulance service. ORCON standards are monitored through key performance indicators.
  • Activation - All calls should have an ambulance 'activated' within 3 minutes of the phone being answered. This is usually made up of the control room tasking the crew within one minute, and the crew having a further 2 minutes to be 'on the road'. This is supposed to be achieved with 95% of calls. Category A calls, which are calls designated by AMPDS as being immediately life threatening. 75% of calls should receive an initial response within eight minutes (of the operator answering the call) and 95% of calls should receive an initial response within 19 minutes. The performance indicator generated by the ambulance service is expressed as a percentage of how many calls meet this. Category B are calls which are designated by AMPDS as being serious, but not immediately life threatening. 95% of calls should receive an initial response within 19 minutes. The performance indicator generated by the ambulance service is expressed as a percentage of how many calls meet this.

The talk page may contain suggestions. (February 2010) Operational research , also known as operations research , is an interdisciplinary mathematical science that focuses on the effective use Employing techniques from other mathematical sciences - such as mathematical modeling statistical analysis , and mathematical optimization - operations research arrives at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. Because of its emphasis on human-technology interaction and because of its focus on practical applications, operations research has overlap with other disciplines, notably industrial engineering and management science , and draws on psychology and organization science . Operations Research is often concerned with determining the maximum (of profit, performance, or yield) or minimum (of loss, risk, or cost) of some real-world objective. Originating in military efforts before World War II, its techniques have grown to concern problems in a variety of industries.

Welcome
The Government Operational Research Service (GORS) supports and champions Operational Research (OR) across government. GORS currently supports policy-making, strategy and operations in many different departments and agencies across England and employs around 400 analysts, ranging from sandwich students to members of the Senior Civil Service.
Operational Research in Government
Central government is the biggest business in Britain. Operational research (OR) specialists advise government on how to make the best possible use of public money. With their skills in modelling and analysis, they help formulate government policy and find effective ways of putting it into practice. Operational research is about working with policy makers and managers to solve tomorrow's problems today. It calls for scientific methods of analysis and a systematic exploration of the quantifiable aspects of key problems. OR analysts are there to give managers objective advice on the most appropriate options for future action. OR analysts carry out the analysis that can help answer vital questions such as:
  • How can we measure and improve the quality of service in education, health, social security and other public offices?

Cornell Operations Research is dedicated to advancing the field of Operations Research through our talented students, scientific discovery, collaborative work with business and industry, and academic outreach. Operations Research (OR) emphasizes optimizing organizational and system performance using advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. There is a close connection between Operations Research (OR) and commercial software. A wide array of software products, from Excel Solver to high performance parallel processing simulation tools, are based on OR-developed abstract ideas and concrete algorithms (several of these packages, notably CPLEX and AMPL for optimization, were developed by Cornell alumni). Such software products are used to solve OR models that are routinely used in manufacturing, distribution, marketing and other business functions.

Today, a colleague of mine sent me a link to a news article entitled Tiny Brained Bees Solve a Complex Mathematical Problem , which appeared on the Queen Mary, University of London web site and on the Guardian web site Scientists at Queen Mary, University of London and Royal Holloway, University of London have discovered that bees learn to fly the shortest possible route between flowers even if they discover the flowers in a different order. Bees are effectively solving the Travelling Salesman Problem, and these are the first animals found to do this. Incorrect Statement 1: that we can solve today. OR is about being much smarter than simply enumerating all the possible solutions to a problem. Incorrect Statement 2: Wrong again!
