    Operational Research
What do LSE Operational Research graduates do? Employability skills Personal development planning Operational research has been taught at LSE for the past 50 years. The department offers three very popular degree programmes and was one of the first departments to offer an MSc in the subject. The department has an active research programme and was awarded a top rating of 5A in the most recent (2001), Research Assessment Exercise. Operational research attracts a multicultural student body from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the department. The objective of operational research is to work with clients to find practical solutions to operational or strategic problems, often within tight time constraints. Students become skilled in tackling complex problems and develop a set of transferable skills that can prove highly attractive to employers in many job sectors.

    Death of Benoit Mandelbrot
The mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot has passed away at the age of 85 . Mandelbrot made a career in defining and studying fractals , geometric shapes that do not lose complexity as you zoom in on them. Things like coastlines are fractals: as you zoom in on a coastline, smaller and smaller inlets and other curves appear. For me, my introduction to this area was by my advisor John Bartholidi who used space filling curves , a type of fractal, Anyone know other examples of how fractals have been used in operations research? More patent madness! ... announced the reason for a new release of the software: We have been informed by one of the patent holders that LDS (limited discrepancy search) is patented in the United States of America. While this does not pose an issue per se for us as developers (the MIT license under which Gecode is released makes that clear), it does to you as users. After weighing the merits of offering LDS in Gecode with the effort for obtaining a non-commercial license, we have decided to remove LDS from Gecode. Gecode 3.4.2 removes LDS.

Welcome! The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) educates students to become highly skilled in: the quantitative modeling and analysis of a broad array of systems-level decision problems concerned with economic efficiency, productivity and quality; the development and creative use of analytical and computational methods for solving these problems; and to obtain the broader skills, background and knowledge necessary to be an effective professional in a rapidly-changing global economy. IEOR engineers work in a variety of industries, including: communications, entertainment, finance, food, health, logistics, manufacturing, medicine, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, sports, travel, and transportation. What can you do with an IEOR or ORMS degree?

Available for entry in October 2010 Graduate Profiles - read how some of our alumni benefited from our MSc in Operational Research. As from September 2003 the MSc has also been offered by Distance Learning The course is designed to take students with a wide variety of first degrees. The class is typically about 30 strong, a size allowing good organisation of groupwork, as well as attention to the needs of each individual student. Some of the MSc OR 2006-07 students on graduation day in July 2008. The programme consists of a mixture of core and optional lecture courses, interspersed with practical exercises and work experience. For MSc candidates, this is followed by an extended external project.
    Course Objective
MSc in OR aims to realise the potential of graduates, so that they immediately can play an effective role in providing model-based support to managers to help them make better decisions at an operational/technical level. Students will develop a rigorous academic understanding of advanced analytical methods that are used to provide structured and analytical approaches to decision-making. Intellectual and personal skills will also be developed in the effective practice of using OR models to support decision-makers.

The Matrix operational research (OR) team provides realistic analysis and forecasting to help clients make the most efficient and effective use of their resources. We use established OR methods, such as simulation, process mapping, system dynamics, multi-criteria decision-making, and benchmarking, to:
    • identify processes and practices that add value; determine the resources needed to meet demand; run “what if?” scenarios to test the likely impact of change; simplify complex problems to make decisions involving change, much easier; track and analyse performance; and identify the symptoms of problems and diagnose their sources.
We build models of business processes, focusing on what is most important and relevant. We use these models to help our clients resolve the complex problems and challenges they face. To be effective and to do this with the necessary sector insight, we call on our company specialists in such areas as health, criminal justice, social care, and local government. We also maintain links with leading organisations and academics in OR, such as LSE’s Operations Management Department, and are active in the Operational Research Society. This ensures we are up-to-date with best practices and provide our clients with world-class services.
