Introduction
Welcome to the 22 nd International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA 2011). IWOTA workshops bring together mathematicians and engineers working in operator theory and its applications to related fields, ranging from classical analysis, differential and integral equations, complex and harmonic analysis to mathematical physics, mathematical system and control theory, signal processing and numerical analysis. IWOTA gathers leading experts from all over the world for an intensive exchange of information and opinion, and for tracing the future developments in the field. The conference will be held from Monday July 4 through Friday July 8, with Sunday July 3 as arrival day and Saturday July 9 as departure day.
Invited speakers
  • Alexei B. Aleksandrov (Steklov Inst. St. Petersburg, Russia) Joseph A. Ball (Virginia Tech, USA) Carl C. Cowen (Purdue University, USA) Gilles Godefroy (Inst. Math. Jussieu, France) J. William Helton (UC San Diego, USA) Marinus A. Kaashoek (Vrije Universiteit, Netherlands)

Operator Theory Seminar
This seminar, organized by Man-Duen Choi, Chandler Davis, George Elliott, and Peter Rosenthal, is devoted, loosely speaking, to the study of all areas of mathematics involving Hilbert space operators. (This has variously been interpreted recently to include matrix theory, index theory of differential operators and other aspects of non-commutative geometry, invariant subspace theory, quantum information theory, C*-algebra classification theory, and string theory.)

Commutative and noncommutative Shilov boundaries
The commutative Shilov boundary is a generalization of the maximum modulus theorem to uniform algebras in C(X). Since C(X) is the prototypical abelian C*-algebra, this boundary has a natural generalization to certain subspaces and subalgebras of (noncommutative) C*-algebras. It provides an answer to the following question: how is the C*-algebra generated by a concrete operator system S related to the C*-algebra generated by a completely isometric image of S?
