Identity and Individuality in Quantum Theory
First published Tue Feb 15, 2000; substantive revision Fri Jan 20, 2006 What are the metaphysical implications of quantum physics? One way of approaching this question is to consider the impact of the theory on our understanding of objects as individuals with well defined identity conditions. One view is that quantum theory implies that the fundamental particles of physics cannot be regarded as individual objects in this sense. Such a view has motivated the development of non-standard formal systems which are appropriate for representing such non-individual objects. However, it has also been argued that quantum physics is in fact compatible with a metaphysics of individual objects. Nevertheless, such objects are indistinguishable in a sense which leads to the violation of Leibniz's famous Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles. Finally, this underdetermination of the metaphysics of individuality by the physics has important implications for the realism-antirealism debate.

    1. INTRODUCTION
It is an especial pleasure for me to have this opportunity to pay my respects to my friend and colleague Ivor Robinson. I have chosen to hold forth on the origins of twistor theory for two reasons. The first is that Ivor's 60th birthday very nearly coincides with what is (for me) the 20th birthday of the theory, so this seemed to be a reasonable point at which to examine how it stands today, in relation to its original aims and aspirations. But also Ivor himself played a direct and important part in those origins. In fact, I can think of several essentially independent influences that Ivor had, one of which was quite crucial. I hope the reader will bear with me and forgive me for presenting an account which, to a large extent, consists of personal or technical reminiscences. But I hope, also, that there will actually be some scientific value in these ramblings. TOP

    Quantum Theory
In November 1922, when Einstein and Elsa were visiting Japan as part of an extended tour of the Far East, they received the news that Einstein had been awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics. Although Einstein was most famous for his theory of relativity, the prize was officially awarded for his work on quantum theory. Throughout the first quarter of the century, Einstein made many important contributions to this field, the first of which was his 1905 paper on the photoelectric effect. From 1905 to 1923, he was one of the only scientists to take seriously the existence of light quanta, or photons. However, he was strongly opposed to the new version of quantum mechanics developed by Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schroedinger in 1925-26, and from 1926 onwards, Einstein led the opposition to quantum mechanics. He was thus both a major contributor to and a major critic of quantum theory.

    53. Theories With Problems By Keith Mayes
Examination of theories in physics from the Big Bang to Quantum Theory, time travel, superluminal speed and Time itself.

THEORIES WITH PROBLEMS by Keith Mayes Paperback now on sale The Big Bang, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Time, Light Speed, Gravity, Electromagnetism, all have their theories that attempt to explain why these things are the way they are. These theories form part of our understanding of the fundamental laws of the universe, but are of course unable to provide all the answers we seek. All theories have problems in that they cannot be proven to be absolutely correct, they do not necessarily accurately describe the way things really are. They are constructed as a working model that is a useful aid to our understanding, of observed phenomenon and as a method of predicting future outcomes. When a theory is found to be wrong, it is either discarded, or as is more generally the case, modified, until it again appears to match the observations. A theory, no matter how well it appears to accurately describe any phenomenon, is provisional, it can never be proven to be completly correct, but it may be proven wrong. It will therefore always be impossible to claim a final theoretical solution to anything. "As being is to becoming, so is truth to belief. If then, Socrates, amid the many opinions about the gods and the generation of the universe, we are not able to give notions which are altogether and in every respect exact and consistent with one another, do not be surprised. Enough if we deduce probabilities as likely as any others; for we must remember that I who am the speaker and you who are the judges are only mortal men". (Plato)

        Group Overview
Recent developments in atomic physics and quantum optics have made possible experimental studies of some of the unresolved issues in the foundations of quantum mechanics. The same techniques look promising for the construction of quantum computers and communication systems whose security is ensured by quantum cryptography. The quantum theory group at Carnegie Mellon is studying various problems related to quantum foundations and quantum information theory, including computation and cryptography. The consistent histories approach to quantum theory was initiated at Carnegie Mellon in 1984, and was subsequently developed both here and at several other institutions. At the present time it provides the only fully consistent procedure for integrating probability theory into standard quantum mechanics without appealing to measurements or hidden variables. See the Consistent Histories Homepage for further information. It has been used to study a variety of problems in cosmology, quantum optics, and quantum information theory. Current research at Carnegie Mellon includes the application of consistent histories ideas to resolve some of the long-standing paradoxes of quantum theory, such as two-slit interference and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlated states, without having to invoke mysterious long-range influences or other ghostly effects.

    INTRODUCTION
"Natural science does not simply describe and explain nature; it is a part of the interplay between nature and ourselves; it describes nature as exposed to our method of questioning." Werner Heisenberg in Physics and Philosophy, 1958 We offer evidence that our discoveries present a significant contribution towards resolving some of the current difficulties of grand unification research, such as the questions regarding the fundamental structure of our universe, its origin, evolution and its age; the reconciliation of the mathematical concept of continuum and limitless continuity with the concept of spacetime ; the concept of an acausal connection active in the spacetime continuum, where according to Carl Gustav Jung and Wolfgang Pauli , "our primary mathematical intuitions could be arranged before we become conscious of them" with the number being primordial, pre-existent to our consciousness (in quantum mechanics there are effects such as quantum tunneling, radioactive decay of an atom and the probability function collapse that might be considered acausal ); the essence of the material body, that is extension itself and its universal non-local connections; the shortcoming of the Cartesian coordinate system with its patchwork of bounding surfaces and coordinates; the indeterminate notion of a point particle; the space composed of points; the relationship of space to matter and light to time; the
