Introduction to Quantum Theory
Chemistry began as a discipline to document materials that restore health, as pharmacy is today. During the 16th to 18th centuries, we have learned that material consists of compounds that are combinations and variation of only about 90 chemical elements, each with a unique atomic weight. The variation of their macroscopic properties as a function of the atomic weight is very interesting. For example, lithium, sodium, potassium and cesium react with water vigorously, and their reactivity increases as their atomic weights increase. This discovery led to their arrangement in a periodic table in the 19th century. During the 20th century, chemists have studied the structure of atoms. The discovery of electrons in 1897 by J.J. Thomson showed that there were more fundamental particles present in the atoms. Fourteen years later, Rutherford discovered that most of the mass of an atom resides in a tiny nucleus whose radius is 100,000 times smaller than that of an atom. In the mean time, Max Planck (1858-1947) theorized that light beams were made of photons that are equivalent to particles of wave motion. These discoveries created new concepts. When these concepts and discoveries are integrated, new ideas emerge. The result is a

Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics
First published Sun Mar 24, 2002 The Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) is an approach to quantum mechanics according to which, in addition to the world we are aware of directly, there are many other similar worlds which exist in parallel at the same space and time. The existence of the other worlds makes it possible to remove randomness and action at a distance from quantum theory and thus from all physics.
  • 1. Introduction 2. Definitions
    1. Introduction
The fundamental idea of the MWI, going back to Everett 1957 , is that there are myriads of worlds in the Universe in addition to the world we are aware of. In particular, every time a quantum experiment with different outcomes with non-zero probability is performed, all outcomes are obtained, each in a different world, even if we are aware only of the world with the outcome we have seen. In fact, quantum experiments take place everywhere and very often, not just in physics laboratories: even the irregular blinking of an old fluorescent bulb is a quantum experiment. There are numerous variations and reinterpretations of the original Everett proposal, most of which are briefly discussed in the entry on

Title: The Quantum Theory of Ur-Objects as a Theory of Information
Authors: Holger Lyre (Submitted on 26 Nov 1996) Abstract: The quantum theory of ur-objects proposed by C. F. von Weizsaecker has to be interpreted as a quantum theory of information. Ur-objects, or urs, are thought to be the simplest objects in quantum theory. Thus an ur is represented by a two-dimensional Hilbert space with the universal symmetry group SU(2), and can only be characterized as ''one bit of potential information''. In this sense it is not a spatial but an ''information atom''. The physical structure of the ur theory is reviewed, and the philosophical consequences of its interpretation as an information theory are demonstrated by means of some important concepts of physics such as time, space, entropy, energy, and matter, which in ur theory appear to be directly connected with information as ''the'' fundamental substance. This hopefully will help to provide a new understanding of the concept of information. Comments: 11 pages Subjects: Quantum Physics (quant-ph) Journal reference: Int.J.Theor.Phys. 34 (1995) 1541

Biography
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen on October 7, 1885, as the son of Christian Bohr, Professor of Physiology at Copenhagen University, and his wife Ellen, Adler. Niels, together with his younger brother Harald (the future Professor in Mathematics), grew up in an atmosphere most favourable to the development of his genius - his father was an eminent physiologist and was largely responsible for awakening his interest in physics while still at school, his mother came from a family distinguished in the field of education.
After matriculation at the Gammelholm Grammar School in 1903, he entered Copenhagen University where he came under the guidance of Professor C. Christiansen, a profoundly original and highly endowed physicist, and took his Master's degree in Physics in 1909 and his Doctor's degree in 1911.

  • H.A. Lorentz : "He meant more than all the others I have met on life's journey."
  • and Louis de Broglie developed a quantum theory that appealed to Einstein. He said de Broglie had "lifted a corner of the great veil." But it was soon found that this theory was mathematically equivalent to the Heisenberg theory, which Einstein distrusted.
  • Max Born , another pioneer of the quantum theory, was a friend of Einstein for many years.
In 1916 Einstein devised an improved fundamental statistical theory of heat, embracing the quantum of energy. His theory predicted that as light passed through a substance it could stimulate the emission of more light. This effect is at the heart of the modern laser.

    The Bottom Line
Quantum Engima is an enjoyable, expansive, and clear look at quantum theory, its various interpretations, and the philosophical questions that arise in conjunction with it. The authors focus on the role consciousness plays in resolving quantum-level situations, and what the ultimate significance of this might be. For anyone intrigued by quantum physics, this book provides clear insight into the key issues of the field, though there is little new for those already well-versed in the topic.

'Quantum Theory Spiritual Panacea or Red Herring?' paper by Ian Lawton.

Quantum Theory: Spiritual Panacea, or Red Herring? © Ian Lawton 2006 [Note that there is a new section in The Big Book of the Soul entitled 'Quantum Mysticism' that represents a further update of this paper; see chapter 8, pp. 231-5] For many years I have endorsed the idea that modern science is at the forefront of introducing a new metaphysical worldview. And while I do not now reject this idea completely, recent investigation has led me to the conclusion that my own use of elements of both quantum and string theory to support a Rational Spiritual worldview requires significant amendment. Nor am I convinced that the recent exposure that quantum theory has had via films such as 'What the Bleep do we Know?', involving distinguished contributors such as Fred Alan Wolf and Amit Goswami, has helped to clear up certain areas of confusion - however much, in one sense, I am delighted by the effect they have had in galvanising a more spiritual worldview. In order to explain some of these reservations, we need to recap a little. Basic quantum theory resolved the paradox that particles such as electrons seem to have the characteristics of both particles and waves. More specifically, it proposed that they are 'probability waves' that only become particle-like - that is, for example, take on a specific position - when they are observed. However there are a number of supposed implications of this that are not as concrete as I and others have tended to make out. We will examine each in turn.

Responding to him, I had to defend and explain both of my theories better resulting in better written articles. At the same time, I decided to make improvements to the theory of distance-time. I had written it 12 years earlier. I understood it better at this time than I did 12 years ago, and I knew that I could make some improvements. I believe it is good to be aware of a couple of past events in regards to my theories. A professional physicist in good standing in the physics community tried to push my theories into a professional electronic print system. He was threatened to be banned from that site if he did not stop! Also, a student had contacted me in the past about one of my theories that he wished to use in his work. I warned him against it, because his teacher probably would not have appreciated it. Essentially my articles are currently unpublishable! I hope someday that will change. For now, however, it is best to read them for personal interest only. I hope you take the little history I just gave in regards to my theories in the spirit it was intended. I do believe in the potential of my work and so have others. New theories with potential may catch peoples' imaginations, but they often do not go over very well with others who have a more entrenched view. My theories are controversial.
