Chapter 1
The Ecosystems Perspective: Implications for Practice
Mark A. Mattaini and Carol H. Meyer
Social work involves, at its core, work with interconnected transactional networks. The ecosystems perspective has been almost universally accepted in social work because it provides a framework for thinking about and understanding those networks in their complexity. This strategy for viewing the world can at first seem rather abstract, so it may be useful to explore why it was developed and has been so widely adopted. Since the beginning of the profession, practice has been focused on the person and the environment. This "psychosocial" focus is so important as a distinguishing feature of social work that it has become its identified purpose: to address the psychosocial matrix of which individuals, families, groups, and communities are constituents.
Although the person-in-environment concept has governed practice since the work of Mary Richmond (1917) nearly a century ago and has been defined and redefined (Hamilton, 1951; Hollis, 1972) over the years, its hyphenated structure has contributed to a continuing imbalance in emphasis on the person or the environment. As a result, practitioners have often attended primarily to one or the other, missing key dimensions of the case. For example, a child who refused to attend school might have been treated for depression, with limited or no attention paid to the role of his school or his family (his environment) in his behavior. Conversely, attention only to serious dysfunction in a school or a family might have led to ignoring the plight of the child’s response. Often, practitioners have selected a focus that was compatible with their preferences, assigning peripheral status to either the person or environment.

http://www.umsl.edu/~sauter/analysis/intro/system.htm
Information Systems College of Business Administration University of Missouri - St. Louis Systems Theory
A system is composed of interacting parts that operate together to achieve some objective or purpose
a system is intended to "absorb" inputs, process them in some way and produce outputs
outputs are defined by goals, objectives or common purposes

View pdf version There are five components that need to be considered when defining the system: people, organization, data, technology and type of decision
In order to understand the relationship between inputs, outputs and processes, you need to understand the environment in which all of this occurs.
The environment represents everything that is important to understanding the functioning of the system, but is not part of the system.
The environment it is that part of the world that can be ignored in the analysis except for its interaction with the system.
It includes: competition, people, technology, capital, raw materials, data, regulation and opportunities.
The boundary defines the difference between the environment and the system; the correct boundary is a function of the problem under consideration.

edit Inputs and Outputs
Input is something put into a system or expended in its operation to achieve output or a result. Output is the information produced by a system or process from a specific input. Within the context of systems theory, the inputs are what are put into a system and the outputs are the results obtained after running an entire process or just a small part of a process. Because the outputs can be the results of an individual unit of a larger process, outputs of one part of a process can be the inputs to another part of the process.
edit Input-Output Analysis
Input-output analysis is “a technique used in economics for tracing resources and products within an economy. The system of producers and consumers is divided into different branches, which are defined in terms of the resources they require as inputs and what they produce as outputs. The quantities of input and output for a given time period, usually expressed in monetary terms, are entered into an input-output matrix within which one can analyze what happens within and across various sectors of an economy where growth and decline takes place and what effects various subsidies may have” (Krippendorf).
edit Areas of Consideration
Systems theory is “transdisciplinary study of the abstract organization of phenomena, independent of their substance, type, or spatial or temporal scale of existence” (Universiteit). It can be applied to general systems that exist in nature or, in a business context, organizational or economic systems. In studying systems theory, there are a few common, major aspects to consider.

BUKHARIN AND RIGHTIST
ECONOMIC THEORY By Alexandra Ginieres
Bukharin by Tareq Rahim By 1905, at the age of sixteen, Bukharin had already become a leading member of the illegal student movement associated with the social democrats. As a political radical Bukharin was frequently imprisoned and was exiled in 1911, during which timed he lived and worked in Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and the United States. It was during his time in exile that Bukharin established himself as a political thinker and theoretician. He completed his education and familiarized himself with western languages and theoretical literature. By 1917 he was able to speak and read German, French, and English. He published several important articles and completed The Economic Theory of the Leisure Class and Imperialism and World Economy. After the March 1917 Revolution Bukharin returned to Moscow and established a reputation as a Bolshevik theorist that was so strong that it was second only to Lenin. He became a prominent organizer of the October Revolution, served for twenty years on the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party, and was a member of the politburo for ten years. He was also in charge of Pravda between 1917 and 1929. Although Bukharin and Lenin were often in disagreement over how Marx’s socialist system was to be put into practice, among many other things, the two began a strong relationship and had respect for each other. Lenin spoke of Bukharin as being "the greatest and most valuable theoretician in the party," and "deservedly the favourite of the party." Bukharin’s work influenced Lenin, in particular his book on imperialism, Imperialism and World Economy, which Lenin borrowed from in his own writings on the subject. After Lenin’s death Bukharin became the leading theorist of the party and was chief of staff of the Bolshevik Party.

Family System Theory
When someone hears the words family and therapy together people think the worst, but in reality the family system theory is assistance in growing the bond between family members at tough times in life. No one is perfect and every family has some sort of problems which could be caused by many of things which has an impact on everyone. With a little guidance in overcoming and the help of a therapist the family will be able to get back on track and move on with life by getting over the hurting which a situation or family members could be causing the family. Therapists will first look at the... Read Full Essay Already a Member?

119. Herbert Spener And Inevitable Progress 50k
Spencer is so grandiose that it is hard to summarize his ideas, yet he was one of the most influential thinkers in nineteenth-century Britain, and his ideas were an inspiration around the world. His version of evolution was utterly generalised in all the ways Darwin tried to be circumspect. The organic analogies which Spencer developed are the foundation-stones for the widespread idea of functionalism across the biomedical and human sciences, extending to architecture, systems theory, cybernetics and information theory. The essay was reprinted in a collection from the journal G. Marsden, ed., Victorian Values. Longman, 1990.

Herbert Spener and Inevitable Progress Spencer is so grandiose that it is hard to summarize his ideas, yet he was one of the most influential thinkers in nineteenth-century Britain, and his ideas were an inspiration around the world. His version of evolution was utterly generalised in all the ways Darwin tried to be circumspect. The organic analogies which Spencer developed are the foundation-stones for the widespread idea of functionalism across the biomedical and human sciences, extending to architecture, systems theory, cybernetics and information theory. I have written in detail about his ideas in many books and essays. An invitation from the editor of History Today led to this attempt briefly to circumscribe Spencer's work and impact. 120. The Systems Approach
Systems Theory. The Systems Approach. The term systems is derived from the Greek word synistanai, which means to bring together or combine.
http://silvae.cfr.washington.edu/ecosystem-management/Systems.html
Systems Theory The Systems Approach
  • Specialization : A system is divided into smaller components allowing more specialized concentration on each component.
  • Grouping : To avoid generating greater complexity with increasing specialization, it becomes necessary to group related disciplines or sub-disciplines.
  • Coordination : As the components and subcomponents of a system are grouped, it is necessary to coordinate the interactions among groups.
  • Emergent properties : Dividing a system into subsystems (groups of component parts within the system), requires recognizing and understanding the "emergent properties" of a system; that is, recognizing why the system as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. For example, two forest stands may contain the same tree species, but the spatial arrangement and size structure of the individual trees will create different habitats for wildlife species. In this case, an emergent property of each stand is the wildlife habitat.
What is a system?
