Universal Algebra Universal algebra studies common properties of all algebraic structures, including groups rings fields lattices , etc. A universal algebra is a pair , where and are sets and for each is an operation on . The algebra is finitary if each of its operations is finitary. A set of function symbols (or operations) of degree is called a signature (or type). Let be a signature. An algebra is defined by a domain (which is called its carrier or universe) and a mapping that relates a function to each -place function symbol from Let and be two algebras over the same signature , and their carriers are and , respectively. A mapping is called a homomorphism from to if for every and all If a homomorphism is onto , then it is called epimorphism . If is an epimorphism , then is called a homomorphic image of . Universal algebra is the field of mathematics that studies the ideas common to all algebraic structure s.
1 Basic idea
From the point of view of universal algebra, an algebra is a set A together with a collection of operations on A . An n ary operation on A is a function that takes n elements of A and returns a single element of A . Thus, a 0-ary operation (or nullary operation ) is simply an element of A , or a constant , often denoted by a letter like a . A 1-ary operation (or unary operation ) is simply a function from A to A , often denoted by a symbol placed in front of its argument, like ~ x . A 2-ary operation (or binary operation ) is often denoted by a symbol placed between its arguments, like x y . Operations of higher or unspecified arity are usually denoted by function symbols, with the arguments placed in parentheses and separated by commas, like

I came to the University of Houston in 1969 with a degree from the University of Bonn (PhD 1966, Habilitation 1973, Darmstadt). My main research interests are in Mathematical Logic, Universal Algebra, Lattice Theory and Logic Programming. Some of my papers, e.g., on quasi-universal and projective model classes are with Manfred Armbrust who retired from the University of Cologne. A paper on non-standard lattice theory is with two of my former Ph.D. students Mai Gehrke and Matt Insall . We had this paper dedicated to Abraham Robinson.

Universal algebra
has enjoyed a particularly explosive growth in the last twenty years ( ed: this book was published in 1981), and a student entering the subject now will find a bewildering amount of material to digest.
This text is not intended to be encyclopedic; rather, a few themes central to universal algebra have been developed sufficiently to bring the reader to the brink of current research. The choice of topics most certainly reflects the authors' interests. Chapter I contains a brief but substantial introduction to lattices. and to the close connection between complete lattices and closure operators. In particular, everything necessary for the subsequent study of congruence lattices is included.
