Wavelets in Computer Graphics
Multiresolution techniques and the use of hierarchy have a long history in computer graphics. Most recently these approaches have received a significant boost and increased interest through the introduction of the mathematical framework of wavelets . With their roots in signal processing and harmonic analysis, wavelets have lead to a number of efficient and easy to implement algorithms. Wavelets have already had a major impact in several areas of computer graphics:
  • Image Compression and Processing: some of the most powerful compression techniques for still and moving images are based on wavelet transforms;
  • Global Illumination: wavelet radiosity and radiance algorithms are asymptotically faster than other finite element techniques;
  • Hierarchical Modeling: using multiresolution representations for curves and surfaces accelerates and simplifies many common editing tasks;
  • Animation: the large constrained optimization tasks which arise in physically based modeling and animation subject to goal constraints can be solved faster and more robustly with wavelets;
  • Volume Rendering and Processing: wavelets can greatly facilitate dealing with huge data sets since they can be used for compression as well as feature detection and enhancement;

Since 1993, this conference series has provided a forum for presentation of results in wavelet theory and applications, interpreted very broadly. It welcomes original papers on the mathematics of signal processing and in all areas of mathematical sciences that are affected fundamentally by the choice of signal representation. The series distinguishes itself by successfully straddling disciplinary boundaries; it has drawn preeminent researchers in mathematics, signal and image processing, computer vision, medical imaging, neuroscience, physics, and other fields.

Wavelet Analysis
Wavelets
In the previous section we saw how one measure of the stationarity of a time series was to calculate the running variance using a fixed-width window. Although we pointed out the disadvantage of using a fixed-width window, one could repeat the analysis with a variety of window widths. By smoothly varying the window width one could then build a picture of the changes in variance versus both time and window width. The obvious problem with this technique is the simple "boxcar" shape of the window function, which introduces edge effects such as ringing. As mentioned earlier, using such a black-box-car, we still have no information on what is going on within the box, but only recover the average energy. In Figure 2a we see an example of a wave "packet", of finite duration and with a specific frequency. One could imagine using such a shape as our window function for our analysis of variance. This "wavelet" has the advantage of incorporating a wave of a certain period, as well as being finite in extent. In fact, the wavelet shown in Figure 2a (called the Morlet wavelet) is nothing more than a Sine wave (green curve in Figure 2b) multiplied by a Gaussian envelope (red curve).

Mission Statement
More than ever, current technological trends make it desirable to blend methods from a variety of disciplines. Wavelet analysis is one recent example where such cross-pollination has borne rich fruit. Ideas from mathematics (Caderon-Zygmund and Littlewood-Paley theories), physics (coherent states and renormalization groups), and engineering (filter banks, subband coding, and pyramid algorithms) were combined into a powerful structure superseding all of the original ingredients. On the other hand, many engineers have become so specialized that two workers, chosen at random, are unlikely to be able to communicate. For example, a signal processing specialist may know little about electromagnetics, even though he or she often deals with signals communicated by electromagnetic waves and containing noise generated by electromagnetic sources. Every engineering subfield has developed its own concepts, language, notation, acronyms, and simplified or schematic world view. Such inbreeding not only presents a barrier to outsiders; it also limits insiders by giving them the illusion of complete understanding and discouraging the exploration of ideas from other disciplines. During this time of rapid transitions, many assumptions underlying the traditional methods fail, and it becomes necessary to return to fundamental scientific principles, often rooted in physics. The Center for Signals and Waves is based, in part, on the conviction that a deeper understanding of the physical nature of signals and noise, as well as the processes by which they are generated, propagated and detected, can be of substantial value. This is a

Wavelets for Computer Graphics
Overview
Wavelets are a mathematical tool for hierarchically decomposing functions. They allow any function to be described in terms of a coarse overall shape, plus details that range from broad to narrow. As the figures below illustrate, wavelets can be applied to a wide variety of objects used in graphics, including images, curves, surfaces, and the solutions to lighting simulations. Images

Publications
Although a great deal has been written about wavelets, most of the literature uses terminology from signal processing and pure mathematics. Our aim in writing the tutorial article and the book listed below was to provide a consistent theoretical framework for those working in computer graphics, as well as examples of graphics applications that make use of wavelets. WAILI Wavelets with Integer Lifting
Introduction
WAILI is a wavelet transform library. It includes some basic image processing operations based on the use of wavelets and forms the backbone of more complex image processing operations.
Features
WAILI
  • Uses integer wavelet transforms based on the Lifting Scheme
  • Provides various wavelet transforms of the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau family of biorthogonal wavelets
  • Provides crop and merge operations on wavelet-transformed images
  • Provides noise reduction based on wavelet thresholding using Generalized Cross Validation
  • Provides scaling of images
  • Provides edge enhancement of images
  • Provides also some simple image operations (addition and subtraction of images)
  • Allows different image representations (RGB, YUV, Lab, ...)
WAILI.xl is a version of WAILI with Extensions for Very Large Images . Very large images are divided in blocks, which do not necessarily have to be present in the computer system's main memory. WAILI.xl provides most of the operations implemented in WAILI.
Implementation
The software library is written in C++ and extensively uses features of the ISO C++ 97 Standard to allow for a cleaner design. The development was done under

Normal Incidence and Angle Seismic Wavelet Estimation Fugro-Jason has invested a great deal of resources in developing and implementing the most advanced wavelet estimation methods and a wide variety of QC capabilities to ensure that a high-quality wavelet is obtained. Accurate wavelet estimation is absolutely critical to the success of any seismic inversion. The inferred shape of the seismic wavelet may strongly influence the seismic inversion results and therefore subsequent assessments of the reservoir quality. Inversion is a two-step process. In step one, the seismic wavelet is estimated. In step two, that wavelet is used to estimate the seismic reflectivity. The final acoustic impedance is derived from that estimated seismic reflectivity. Therefore if the wavelet is incorrect, the seismic inversion results will be invalid.
Methodology
The Wavelets module encompasses several methods:
  • Model-driven wavelet phase and amplitude spectrum estimation at well control.
