The problems with wavelets
Filed under: DCT Dirac Snow psychovisual optimizations ... wavelets I have periodically noted in this blog and elsewhere various problems with wavelet compression, but many readers have requested that I write a more detailed post about it, so here it is. Wavelets have been researched for quite some time as a replacement for the standard discrete cosine transform used in most modern video compression.  Their methodology is basically opposite: each coefficient in a DCT represents a constant pattern applied to the whole block, while each coefficient in a wavelet transform represents a single, localized pattern applied to a section of the block.  Accordingly, wavelet transforms are usually very large with the intention of taking advantage of large-scale redundancy in an image.  DCTs are usually quite small and are intended to cover areas of roughly uniform patterns and complexity. mesh MC No known method exists for efficient intra coding.

Abstract:
Our purpose is to make the wavelet techniques approachable without unnecessary mathematical sophistication. Therefore, graphics are more important than the formulae or analytical results, shown in small print. Also, with the expectation that the user wants to interrogate his or her data from the viewpoint of the underlying physics, only a few simple wavelets with readily interpretable transforms are used: the first two Gaussians and the Morlet wavelets. The examples range from cosines to modulated and intermittent data. I. Introduction II. Basic tools III. Enhancement and statistical reduction IV. Course description:
Wavelets have established themselves as an important tool in modern signal processing as well as in applied mathematics. The objective of this course is to establish the theory necessary to understand and use wavelets and related constructions. A particular emphasis will be put on constructions that are amenable to efficient algorithms, since ultimately these are the ones that are likely to have an impact. We thus study applications in signal processing, communications, and sensing where time-frequency transforms like wavelets play an important role. The course has computer and research projects involving independent study.
Lectures: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00 - 11:20 am; 252 Mechanical Engineering Bldg.

Title: Wavelets on Fractals
Authors: Dorin E. Dutkay Palle E. T. Jorgensen (Submitted on 30 May 2003 ( ), last revised 22 Mar 2004 (this version, v4)) Abstract: We develop the theory of multiresolutions in the context of Hausdorff measure of fractional dimension between and 1. While our fractal wavelet theory has points of similarity that it shares with the standard case of Lebesgue measure on the line, there are also sharp contrasts. These are stated in our main result, a dichotomy theorem. The first section is the case of the middle-third Cantor set. This is followed by a review of the essentials on Hausdorff measure. The remaining sections of the paper cover multiresolutions in the general context of affine iterated function systems. Comments: We have followed all the suggestions and corrections made by the referee. In the introduction, we added an overview of the three themes in the paper, and added some motivation. This was motivated by the comments and suggestions of the referee. We also rearranged the material as suggested by the referee. This makes the three themes in our paper more clear, we believe

ATI's Wavelets: A Conceptual, Practical Approach
Summary:
Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) are in wide use and work very well if your signal stays at a constant frequency (“stationary”). But if the signal could vary, have pulses, “blips” or any other kind of interesting behavior then you need Wavelets. Wavelets are remarkable tools that can stretch and move like an amoeba to find the hidden “events” and then simultaneously give you their location, frequency, and shape. Wavelet Transforms allow this and many other capabilities not possible with conventional methods like the FFT. This course is vastly different from traditional math-oriented Wavelet courses or books in that we use examples, figures, and computer demonstrations to show how to understand and work with Wavelets. This is a comprehensive, in-depth. up-to-date treatment of the subject, but from an intuitive, conceptual point of view. We do look at a few key equations from the traditional literature but only AFTER the concepts are demonstrated and understood. If desired, further study from scholarly texts and papers is then made much easier and more palatable when you already understand the fundamental equations and how they relate to the real world. Each student will receive extensive course slides, a CD with MATLAB demonstrations, and a copy of the instructor’s new book

for those who hate preambles
Warning
This presentation is inspired from S.G. Mallat's book and does not pretend to reflect it exactly. It is concerned with the following topics:
  • Fourier analysis (chapter 2) time-frequency analysis (chapter 4, except for the quadratic energy distributions)) frames (chapter 5) singularity analysis and reconstruction (chapter 6 except for the multifractals) wavelet bases and filter banks (chapter 7)
The following topics from the book are not covered here:
  • chapter 3 about discrete signals (except for the FFT and convolutions algorithms, which are briefly described) chapter 8 on wavelet packets and local cosine bases chapter 9 on approximation chapter 10 about estimation (which is being revised by S.G. Mallat for the French edition and the second US edition) chapter 11 on compression and coding (hope to do it someday)
Proposed Tours
Four tours are proposed, corresponding to four different topics. These tours are linked to each other sequentially. Many links allow navigation from one to topic to another for a nonlinear browsing.
