Platyhelminthes and Acoelomorpha-phyla of controversy
University of Maine
Representative worms from the three major monophyletic groups of flatworms: the Acoelomorpha (represented by an acoel turbellarian), the Catenulida (represented by a retronectid turbellarian), and the Rhabditophora (represented by a digenetic trematode) The relatively small worms that are commonly called flatworms are classified in the phyla Platyhelminthes, whose Greek roots mean, in fact, "flat worm," and the Acoelomorpha, recently removed from the Platyhelminthes into its own phylum. In general, the flatworms
  • are softbodied (lacking cuticle or other rigid skeletal support),
  • have a solid body form (lacking the fluid-filled space, such as coelom, pseudocoel, or hemocoel, between body wall and gut that is seen in other animals),
  • are hermaphroditic (individuals have both male and female reproductive organs and mutually inseminate in sexual reproduction),
  • have spermatozoa with two tails (a pair of flagella arise from the paired centrioles of the developing sperm cell),
  • have a sack-like gut (the only opening to the digestive tissue being the mouth)

These are flatworms, flukes and tapeworms. They have a gastrovascular cavity (no body cavity), true muscle tissue, and moderate levels of cephalization. Turbellaria. This class of acoelomates includes free-living marine organisms. The most well-known example of this class is Planaria Planaria is one of the few aquatic turbellarians. In it, nitrogeneous waste diffuses through the ectoderm. Planaria lack gas exchange and circulation specialization. It has a fine-branching gastrovascular cavity, a simple excretory system that functions only when osmotic forces are balanced and a flat shape - so all the cells are close to water. Osmoregulation is regulated by ciliated cells called flame cells that move water in and out of the flatworm. Flatworms move via cilia on the ventral side where mucus is often secreted when not "swimming" (for a planarian to swim it undulates). Eyespots detect light and lateral flaps locate pheromones. Trematoda and Monogenea.

The flatworms , known in scientific literature as Platyhelminthes or Plathelminthes (from the Greek platy , meaning "flat" and ἕλμινς (root: ἑλμινθ-), helminth- , meaning worm) are a phylum of relatively simple bilaterian unsegmented , soft-bodied invertebrate animals . Unlike other bilaterians, they have no body cavity , and no specialized circulatory and respiratory organs , which restricts them to flattened shapes that allow oxygen and nutrients to pass through their bodies by diffusion In traditional zoology texts Platyhelminthes are divided into Turbellaria , which are mostly non- parasitic animals such as planarians , and three entirely parasitic groups: Cestoda Trematoda and Monogenea . Turbellarians are mostly predators, and live in water or in shaded, humid terrestrial environments such as leaf litter . Cestodes (tapeworms) and trematodes (flukes) have complex life-cycles, with mature stages that live as parasites in the digestive systems of fish or land
